Funny, you should take your own advice, kid. You were the one with the attitude problem, so don't try to lay the blame on others.

What will you do, whine to your daddy? I can do one better. I can contact your ISP.

Another moronic little child gone, and yet another who will insist on shortening down a monosyllabic word for their own benefit. What is it with the children that expect to be allowed to scrub their ass anywhere and however they want, then give an attitude about it? I might not want to know the reason, but we don't have to pick up where their parents obviously failed to raise them.

Not to derail this amazingly useful thread or anything, but how do you do that anyway? And to what end? Do ISP really close down subscribtions because of complaints from a forum moderator? Not that I would naturally be against such practices, of course, but it seems kind of strange to me.

Also, speaking hypothetically: would it be possible for you to contact my ISP? That said, is it really that easy to find out what ISP someone has?

Most people don't fake their hostmask, so you can usually recognize their location and ISP by that. Other than that you could maybe look up the IP, but IPs tend to change a lot.

Well, it depends, you'd probably have a hard time trying to track someone on ADSL in an exotic banana republic like Poland, and I doubt you'd have any success at making TP (Yes, that's also the abbreviation for toilet paper) shutting down their Neo subscription - they'd probably tell you to buzz off, as they do to most customers. Nevertheless, you could determine their ISP by IP ranges.

On the other hand, if the ISP granted you access through LAN (like mine) you'd have no problem tracking the ISP, but they'd have to check the logs to determine who was it using the shared connection and would probably tell you to buzz off, as they do to most customers.

Usually, it will result in the notification of the primary account holder, or if it's an account created for a kid, a notice to the parents. This is especially effective with universities, where you can take several routes; one of my favorites is a very interesting letter addressed to the dean and some senior faculty, with some very creative writing, detailing all sorts of things in the obvious writing style of the poster, complete with a header of the school into it so that it fools their own Bastards. Sometimes it's as complaint FROM the "person themselves" about how someone is being very very mean to them on a message board. I know for a fact that one fellow enjoyed explaining why he was abusing the university's computer lab in order to make a joke out of the university.

As for finding where people are posting from, it isn't too hard if you have their IP and can at least look it up. In the case of a proxy, you just block that proxy and possibly contact the server's owners as well for more info regarding the person. Usually, if they do not know if the server was used as a proxy without their permission, they will be only more than willing to hand over the records of the connection.

What ISPs are easiest/hardest to trace ?

I remember being given trouble on one fourm (had a similar IP range to some longfrogotten troll) since my ISP was Earthlink, apparently theyre hard to trace (or the particular mod didnt know what he was doing, dont know which)
