Horror Films- What works and what doesn't

Are you kidding? First of all the acting was terrible. There wasn't one good actor in that movie, but there were several really, really bad ones.

Incorrect. But it's more of a matter of opinion - can't really prove that point to you.

The guy Miguel, while not the worst, was certainly the most annoying. He delivered the only non-intentional supergay performance, I've ever seen.

He was kind of lame, but he served his purpose.

Secondly, the script sucked.

Howso?

I particularly disliked Bub The Smart Zombie. A zombie firing a gun is just too ridiculous.

Why? The zombies still retain their basic instincts. This is shown in Dawn of the Dead - they go to the mall because they feel safe there, because it's their consumer instinct, because they want to. One of the scientists in Day tells the others that he saw a zombie trying to drive a car down the street. Instinct.

Bub was ex-military. Wouldn't his instincts allow him to shave, salute, and cock/fire a gun?

Why some people find this to be the best of Romero's films is beyond me.

It's the best because it's the most realistic, and the most frightening of the trilogy. It also has the best make-up effects of the three films, and it still holds up to today's standards.

el_Prez]i really enjoy stuff that can freak you out, without jumping out at you. A fine example is in The Shinning when wendy finds jacks "novel".

Very good point. I guess Stephen King just rules when it comes to that (at least as a novelist). I would consider Misery to be a great horror film. The atmosphere was just incredibly scary. And just think about the setting of the movie: Almost all of it was only two characters in one room.

Are you serious?? Dawn is by far the best.

No. Dawn is the most entertaining, and probably has the biggest message. In terms of film, however, Day is the best.

Come on. The only one who even comes close to acting decent in that movie, is the black guy. All of the military guys, however, deliver performances that are so bad, they make the likes of William Shatner and Lorenzo Llamas look good.

Well, the thing I hated the most was Bub, but other than that it's brimming with cliches: the brutal, stupid army guys, the insane doctor, Miguel who tries to act tough but blows it for everybody, etc. All in all, very predictable.

To be fair, though, the script had to be revised pretty heavily, as Romero couldn't get funding for the original script.

It's theorised in Dawn, that the zombies are drawn to the mall because they remember spending a lot of time there, but there's pretty far between walking around in a mall and firing a gun. What's next, the zombies form a trained army? Or maybe they build a rocket and fly it to the moon? Besides, Bub doesn't just remember how to do all this, he actually becomes emotionally attached to the doctor. This is crap IMO.

I find it to be the least frightening, mostly because I spent a lot of the time laughing at the actors. Miguel is practically comic relief. The effects are the best of the trilogy, though, I'll grant you that.

I know that box office numbers doesn't decide whether or not a movie is actually good, but I still find it striking that Day had the biggest budget by far of the trilogy, and still grossed the least (again by far).

Agreed. With Night as a close second, IMO.
