How many characters to have in party and leveling.

Sweet,
So its perfectly normal for recruits to gain expierence when they're not actualyl part of your active squad.
I was confused a lot on this questions because I noticed everytime I'd revist a recruit that I had let rest a mission,
I'd get the level up sound and the level button (in the bottom left corner) as if they had gained the appropiate expierence EVEN if they didn't have any levels up.

I'm guessing the best way to play is to cycle through ALL recruits in turn mission after mission THEN revisit them later on and assign their skills points and perks when you need them.

Any Tomatos from the crowd to dogde?

I still think you can only assign the skill points and choose perks on 5 extra recruits after each mission (assuming they've gained a level).

And swift learner is still broken after the patch.

Hmmm
there is a limitation to this very odd but very useful feature.

INVESTIGATE I SHALL!

Neverless this gives you the oporunity ot leve up 10+1 (your own character) simunatously where 5 can replace your entire (replacable) squad everytime you return to the bunker.

*HIGH FIVES T BOULT*

*MISSES TERRIBLE DUE TO BROKEN SWIFT LEARNER PERK*

DAMN YOU swift learner perk brokeness!

Hate to disagree with you dude but I've been playing 1.27 and found something to the contary

Yes you can only give 5 waiting recruits (that is ones that didn't go on mission) extra skill points each time you return from a mission BUT if you left MORE then 5 recruits at the base and return ANOTHER mission those other waiting recruits can ALSO be assigned skill points ALSO equal ot the amount of leveling up they missed by been back at based.

Hope that makes sense.
If not I'll repost with names of recruits I've witnessed this on.

That wasn't in dispute, but whether you could level more than 5 after every mission or not.

Now I use 5 chars, but play only with mainly one, with that who I made :) But now I'm playing it second time with hard (still too easy). When i played the first time I used all six and played with all them :)

how to level up more than 5 characters in recruitment pool

version 1.27
open up the recruitment pool
empty your current squad members
add other individuals
click on your character portrait
click view
click done
DO NOT EXIT the recruitment pool
remove the NPC's
add other NPC's
repeat until all the people you want leveled up
are done.

exit the recruitment screen
level up your NPC's go back and swap in the other pooled squad members.

Re: how to level up more than 5 characters in recruitment po

I'm new to Fallout Tactics and today played through the first two missions, here's how this stuff seems to work in my v 1.27.

After the first mission I could recruit these guys (I have CH8 and gained a promotion after the mission):

-Farsight
-Stitch
-Trevor
-Brian
-Jo
-Robin
-Jax
-Torn
-Kevin
-Rage
-Rebecca
-Ice
-Mandy

I did this:

I chose this squad for the second mission:

-Rebecca
-Ice
-Mandy
-Jax
-Brian

Here's where it gets interesting.

After the second mission, clicking on the "recruit" button with the Recruit Master gives me the level up sound, and the following recruits have gained 1323 xp while at the base, the same amount my squad in the field gained during the operation:

-Trevor
-Joe
-Robin
-Thorn

-Farsight has 1244 xp, which is what she got from mission 1(I can tell because my merc has 1244+1323=2567 xp)
-Stitch has 2343 xp, which I believe is his starting 1000 + what he got from mission 1. He did some First Aid during that mission which gave him some extra compared to Farsight and my merc.
-Kevin and Rage are at base xp, 2000

This is kind of confusing. Only 4 recruits got xp, when I expected at least 5 to gain. I'm fairly certain I didn't fuck up the prosess I quoted, as I was being careful.

If Trevor, Joe, Robin or Thorn don't "visit" my party before closing this screen, they revert to base xp when next opening the screen. Merely looking at their stat screen and thus "recognizing" the level-up doesn't help. If I add them and remove them, even without looking at anyone's stat screen, they keep the xp and skill points, at least for now.

Also, I didn't get any new recruits available after the second mission, even though I gained another rank, squire. Boo.

I guess I'll try switching all the mercs around again, write down who were the first 5 and last 5 to rotate so I can tell who it is that gets the xp. I'll report more when I finish the third level and we'll see what happens.

PS. I understand it's possible in Tactics to hold on to perks and pick them later for better ones. How does this work, if I don't pick at lvl 3(or 4 or 5) do I pick two perks at lvl 6 or one on lvl 6 and one on lvl 7?

I will go back and check a few post-mission bunker saves to be safe. Several seem to do those experience to win at different speeds, but this could not be get a result of different starting positions XP and rank, and perhaps if they have any "quick learner" perks. I also remember that all recruits into the pool, which were more experienced than your main character, did not gain any experience from your missions at all.
