I can't talk to mrs. Stapleton!

JuzaK

First time out of the vault
I'm playing Fallout 1 and I was about to go get myself an Advanced Power Armor and when I went to the Hub and tried to talk to mrs. Stapleton she just replied (text in red color) like this: "You will have to excuse me, but I have research to do." I also tried waiting some time and talked to her at different times but same thing happened always. Then I tried loading a lot earlier savegame and same thing happened then too. Any help on how I can access those books I need for Advanced Power Armor? Are there any editors which can make me those books? The only inventory editors I found were for Fallout 2.

Ehm, did Smitty tell you to go to the hub for this, or did you just go there assuming you'd get that conversation option?

Yeah he did. I did that one quest for him.

Could you be more precise? Because Smitty doesn't actually have any quest. You only need to have the Power Armor for him to tell you to go to the Hub.

Anyway, did you perhaps steal from Mrs. Stapleton before and get caught?

Yes he does, he asks you to retrieve some parts from the area where the Deathclaws are. After that I he said that he can upgrade my Power Armor. And I'm 100% sure I didn't steal from Stapleton and get caught because I always load the game if I get caught stealing.

edit: And I'm pretty sure that I never talked to her before since both doors of the library building were closed.

That's not Smitty.

What's your karma and reputation? Do you have any special reputations?

Oh yeah my bad. That was Miles, the scientist who told me to go see mrs. Stapleton. In my longest savegame my reputation is 28 and I'm a Champion. In the earlier save my reputation was 23.

See, there's your problem. Miles never tells you to do that. Go talk to Smitty, the smith in the Boneyard. *He* will tell you to go to Mrs. Stapleton.

I talked to Smitty and he told me he could upgrade my Plasma Rifle. I got one in my inventory and he did upgrade it with no problems. Other than that he said nothing about mrs. Stapleton. Miles however asks me if I've been at the Hub to see her which I haven't since I can't talk to her. :(

That's weird. According to Per's guide (and my memory), you should talk to Smitty with a Power Armor on you, and he'll ask you for the chemistry journals.

In any case, you could always try using Falche to give yourself the item.

I checked Per's guide and it said that Smitty tells you to talk to her. I think that there is a typo there because Miles tells you to do that.

I will try Falche now. I guess I'll have to try the one made for Fallout 2 since the Falche made for Fallout 1 can't edit inventory.

edit: I can't edit inventory with Falche :( I tried opening a savegame and this error popped up: "Character data (main1) not found.

Yeah I tried that. It could only edit certain things like change your stimpacks to Combat Armors. It doesn't give you free hands to edit your inventory.
So why don't you put some item in your inventory you don't need, and then change that?

But there's not an option to change items to Advanced Power Armors or even regular Power Armors.

But is there an option to change it to the chemical journals you need from Mrs. Stapleton?

Yup, it's a typo that I have been made aware of.

I can think of two reasons why Stapleton wouldn't talk to you: 1) you threatened her earlier with the "flamethrower" line, in which case she won't talk to you again, or 2) it's the wrong time of day.

If it's the former, and you desperately want the improved armour, you can follow the procedure described here.

I'm pretty sure I didn't threaten her because I always do my dialogues carefully and save before them to try different options. I also tried to talk to her at different times. Weird stuff...

Anyway I followed your instructions on that other topic and it worked! :) I started a new game and rushed to Boneyard and the Hub. At the Hub I dropped the Chemical Journals on the ground and I transferred them to my primary save. Thanks a million for this Per! :D I was very frustrated about this and now I can finally continue playing! You rule!

I know it is 8 years late... but the link is broken. if you still exist could you explain the process. I'm having this issue.
