Actually, his biggest obstacle to liking the game was understanding the interface. He was stuck on the Vault 13 caves attemping to escape/kill the rats, then I interveined and showed him how the interface worked. After that, he just took off on his own. If you can see in the photograph, he already has the leather jacket (meaning he's visited Vault 15/used ropes/bartered in Shady Sands) - and he also has Ian with him.

He still has some questions sometimes about game mechanics but those clear up pretty quickly. Things like, "when is it best to use a called shot?", "is it possible to kill someone with a rock?", etc.

Neat. Sure he's ready for it, though? Awful lot of swearing and such...Unless you've turned on the censor.
 
It was the same thing with me the first time i tried Fallout almost 2 years ago.

I spent a few minutes in the rat cave and gave up because the interface seemed confusing. About a month later I tried it for 10 minutes got it, and flew!!!!

Good job man bring in the kiddies!
