I need a laptop.

At work the doorknobs in charg of ordering got us Toshibas. Now they overpay trough CDW because their heads are up thier collective asses, but that's another story. The 'Shibas came preloaded with spyware that took about an hour to clean up, plus the power management is disabled in favor of Toshiba's own power utility.
There are really only two companies to buy Laptops from
International Business Machines
(Be sure to get a real IBM and not a "Lenovo")
Dell
(Not really overpriced considering they're the last people on earth to ship real computers and not advertising machines full of crapware).
Anything else is either an "Off" brand or a craputer full of adware and shite.

Read before buying ANY computer:
http://cexx.org/craputer.htm
and furthermore:
http://cexx.org/snicker/compaq.htm
So there.

Don't worry, I'm not getting a Compaq. Not a Toshiba either. If i'm getting one at all, I'm aiming towards Asus or Acer.

And trust me, I checked equivalent computers on Dell's webiste, even configured some to be more accurate, and they WERE more expensive. I have a Dell right now, and while it's working, I'm not really satisfied. in restrospect, I realize I could've bought it much cheaper.

Also, I'm moving out in like two weeks, so I'll probably get something before then, and Dell takes more than two weeks to deliver.

*edit*

Ok, I wasn't able to find this PC on an English site, but here's the Swedish version:

I might get this.

how about acer aspire 3000 series?

there are four models, this one:

AS3003LCi
Microsoft® Windows® XP Home; Mobile AMD Sempron? Processor 3000+ (128KB L2 cache, 1.80GHz, up to 1600MHz system bus); 256MB (256/0) DDR333 SDRAM; 40GB hard drive; integrated CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive; 15.0" XGA (1024X768) TFT display; SiSM760GX chipset with integrated Mirage?2 graphics; 802.11b/g WLAN, 10/100 LAN, V.92 modem

Newegg has it at $629.99 dollars (widescreen, 15.4" AS3003WLCi), and $609.99 with normal 15" screen.

I'll gladly pay $20 for the widescreen addition, as I'm going to use it for DVD watching.

Ugh, SiS graphics chips.

Aside from that it looks ok, nothing really standing out except the processor and dvd +/- drive but it looks solid. Have you heard good things about ASUS laptops or are you just going by price or their motherboard reputation?

Mostly price and reputation, and availability, i.e I can just go buy it in the store, instead of waiting a month after ordering it.

I'm not sure about the DVD-R/RW though. Sure, it's nice to be able to make DVDs, but I've only heard bad things about combo DVD and CD drives.

What about the SiS graphics chips?

Note: I don't know anything about computers, if you see something that's crap please don't hesitate to say it and to explain why it is crap.

What? A combo drive cannot burn DVDs, but it can read them. Every DVD±RW drive can burn DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW and DVD-RW media (newer ones can also burn dual layer DVD-R and DVD+R media), but also CD-R and CD-RW. I haven't heard of any problems with either.

They suck. If you get a notebook with a SiS graphics chipset, you can forget about playing games, ever.

I'm not really getting it to play games, though. It's not like I would be able to play Quake 4 or F.E.A.R on it anyway. Not even Rome total war.

I'm not saying I'm going to spend $1200 (and even then, it won't be able to play new games) if I see a good one that's $600, I'll get it.

Not worth it. Watching DVDs on a laptop is annoying, especially with friends, because of the small screen (yes, even with a widescreen), and also usually not too great of an image quality because of scaling.
It's much nicer to watch things like that on your TV, so if you have a decent TV, go for a laptop with at least TV-out as well.

Oh, and you could play Rome: Total War on a laptop. I've done it with a laptop that's almost two years old now (IBM T series)

I won't have a TV. At least, not my own. It's a student corridor. Obviously a TV is superior when it comes to watching DVDs, but well...

One word of warning: Don't expect quality from a brand like that, so if it breaks or something don't expect much. Second, Try to find one in a store and see if it comes with spyware preloaded or some such crap like that...

I love this forum. Just as i'm thinking about buying an laptop a topic appears just when I need one.

What is the word on acer laptops?

My fellow compatriot, I urge you to pick another computer. In fact, I will help you find a better computer. There is not much speck of truth about 256MB of RAM being leading-edge technology, so we can count that one out right away. Instead, I think you should take a look here: http://www.dustinhome.se:80/dacsaportal/?ProdID=5010086675 the extra RAM, similar price and, of course, the slightly better SiSM760GX chipset makes this computer a much better alternative. Asus do not ship their computers loaded with spyware. However, while the above computer is nice, I favor the price tag on this computer: http://www.datorbutiken.com/se/default.php?artId=AC3003LMI Imagine how much money I have saved you! I am truly the one, the only, Megalomaniac! If any of these simians could help you, I'd be surprised... just kidding, hah! The word on the street on Acer laptops, eh? Well, while the quality is average, the support offered is not very diverse from HP's support (completely incompetent). I think when it comes to affordable lightweight laptops IBM are the best. Remember, kids, every penny you spend on Lenovo computers are used to indoctrinate our youth. Buy Dell! Because Uncle Sam would want it that way... assembled and manufactured in China!
