I plan to beat the game using only 3 people

First time out of the vault
I will have myself, and 2 other squad members throughout the whole game to win, set on hardest. I'll use anything available to me to beat the game, so no other handicaps. The beginning isn't too hard, I'm really concerned about the Super Mutants and the Robots because I'll be severely underpowered.

Will I level up twice as fast?

Will I be spreading myself too thin?

Take sneak for my main character?

What perks should I get? (stats for the perks?)

What are some other good tips to do this?

I think the experience points are devided amoung the team members so in all theory you should level up twice as fast yes. Which means if you're lucky you will get the Sniper perk a we be earlier but not when fighting mutents. I always tried to pick off the mutents with nothing but snipers and if they got close switched to a machine gun to finish them off. The hard level will be defending the Ghoul town from mutent attack. For the most part I did the game using two squad memebers (I still had all six in the team though) and if things got heavy ran back to the rest of the team and really nailed the bad guys. Also you can lure the stupid mutents over their own land mines. Or disarm and move them to a place where you can lure them through.

Think - Sniper style game play!

Give your main character high Sneak, Small Guns and an auxiliary skill (I'd go for Throwing since grenades are mighty handy at some points in the game, but depending on which squadmembers you pick you might want to get Lockpicking instead). Give him a good PE as well, so that you can use him as a sniper and as a CQ shootist (sneak, shotgun, some 12 ga shotgun shells, if you know what I mean). Take good squadies with you: you might want to keep Farsight (overall good sharpshooter), but you can also exchange her later on for Rebecca (who has good lockpick skills) or some others.

If you take sneak, take the Silent Running Perk and possible the Tunnel Rat perk. Check a walkthrough or something for other good Perks (some of them don't work well or don't work at all!).

Exp is the same no matter how many in your squad, the only bonus exp is to play on Tough Guy mode (the perk that gives extra exp is udeless).

The only time I finished the game was solo from the beginning on Tough Guy mode (never played at all without Tough Guy), but it wasn't at the hardest difficulty setting. I really think it is easier solo, having other people to control just gets in the way (I play CTB).

I think at hardest difficulty you need Pe10 and sniper all the way.

Once you get to about the fourth mission or so then you just stay fully drugged up through every mission and you are practically immune to normal damage. The only things that ever killed me were rocket launchers and energy weapons (especially rocket launchers). A few times I got killed in outdoor encounters because I didn't take drugs and got knocked unconcious (but with drugs against robots I have been knocked out multiple times on one level and still survived).

So you're sure exp is not double when you have 3 members? That kind of hurts things.. maybe I'll give my guys a whole bunch of ranks of "Swift Learner" to offset the disadvantage... I'm not sure if that'll make it too easy.

I'll definitely go PE 10, with sneaking skills to get up close and kill off pesky rocket launchers or browning M2'ers.

The ghoul town defence mission I'll just have to use lots of drugs and all of us use brownings and I'll have to set lots of mines.

Also save up all you missile luancher amo for that level and train up one heavy weapons guy. Maybe also a minigun would be helpful to (steal gerneral Barnarky's)

Swift Learner is the completely useless Perk I was referring to. Even with the max 3 ranks that is only 15% bonus. So when guys w/o it just hit level 20, guys with it will be what? *almost* level 21? useless. Much better to get increased ranged damage (and believe me, you will need it).

I have been trying the highest difficulty and am finding it basically impossible. Which is really too bad, because hard difficulty is really not a problem. At hard level I can go through the first mission solo without much worry, but at absurd difficulty it is basically impossible to do (i.e. I havn't done it yet) even using all three (not that they help much, they get 1-shotted just like I do, but they can't hit anything, while I can).

Of course I am playing Tough Guy, so I can't save at midpoints through the mission, but I hav no interest in playing if the only way to finish a level is to save a whole bunch during each mission.

The only reason I didn't play tough guy was because I never have enough time to play for a long period of time.

I might up the difficulty rating some time too.

I beat the game solo as well, but I needed someone else in one of the missions to finish it properly. In Preoria I found that the villagers would all die if I went alone, so I took someone along for that one. How did you manage that?

Also in the mission with the self-repairing power nodes, I was stuck on only one saved game. Luckily, allot of very quick dashing around and timed explosives saved the file, so I got through that one eventually. I am curious as to how you finished that one as well, because I found it very difficult.
