The Vault Dweller
always looking for water.
Way back in 2000 I remember borrowing Half-life from a friend. I liked it as an action game however the game became ingrained in my memory as one of my favorites though it wasnt an rpg or strategy simply, because Half-life had such an awesome and believable atmosphere.
Soon thereafter I was at the friend's house when he introduced me to "Sven Co-op" a mod for HL (Half-Life) that enabled cooperative online play. I strongly remember how awesome I thought it was not only that someone could make something so fun thats freeware, but that I could have an action game thats cooperative and not competitive. (I'm not too competitive.)
I never got Sven co-op or bought Half-life...then recently I was at a store and noticed Half-life Anthologies for $20. I figured since it had been so long ago I could replay HL as though it was new and noticing the add-ons I figured I could easily pay twenty just for those. After buying and playing through all of them I then remembered Sven co-op.
Not mind you it took a total of 16 hours to download everything, 8 hours alone for Sven co-op 3.0 and 8 more for the map packs, but once I was playing it was...grand.
The maps and scenarios are at best just as fun as HL or only a little less entertaining and "real" feeling. When you consider that their are almost a dozens of "great" maps and over 100 "decent" ones its well worth it...and thats not even considering the interaction and mayhem of doing this with other people.
Some of the maps are reminiscent of HL with you in the military trying to break into Black Mesa or as a member of the science/security team trying to reach the surface. Sometimes its altered a bit like have you try to hold an area from an attack or navigate a maze which you dont do in HL.
Other maps are very novel. Some have no combat and are just puzzles and challenges consisting of running, jumping, etc. Some are weird...like a map called Secret City where each room has a hidden or obvious mechanism to kill you and an adjoining room with a see through panel where players can watch people die.
The design team also added things that were removed from HL including robots and the baby gargantua.
Keep in mind the download and playing are all FREE!
I admit since Sven is so old (about five years) their arent many servers, but if you go you can easily meet others who've played with you other nights.

Who knows...you could get the honor of seeing this phrase appear in the top left corner if you play enough:
"The Vault Dweller was killed by a head crab."
...at least it wasnt a barnacle.
Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller
