If I Can Dream

First time out of the vault
I was on Hulu watching Total Recall 2070 when I saw an advertisement for an upcoming TV series called If I Can Dream. Very little about the show has been released to the public, but there is a trailer for it. The show itself is unique, in that it will be released first on Hulu and not normal television. Be that as it may, there is some talk of them releasing reruns of it on normal television. The show is going to be created by the same guy who created American Idol, but don't let that fool you, this actually looks good. The characters of the show have (or are going to have) their own Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter profiles. Below are some useful links regarding the show.

Truman Show comes true?

I don't know if I'd draw that comparison. The Truman Show was about a guy whose entire life was on television for the world to see; but everyone was in on it besides him.

Here's a summary of it from Hulu.

Hulu said:
If I Can Dream is the first of a new generation of post reality entertainment. Created by Simon Fuller, If I Can Dream will document the authentic story of five young people who dream of success in Hollywood, revealing every moment of triumph and struggle along the way. It will allow viewers to interact with the individuals and the narrative in real time. If I Can Dream gives open access to a show in a way that has not been attempted before. Watch every move live online as they rehearse, write, socialize and plan their careers. Will these aspiring hopefuls have what it takes to succeed and who will be next to join If I Can Dream via a public audition process? Interactive audience participation makes If I Can Dream a fascinating cultural experiment, opening up the American Dream and democratizing the process of the making of a star.

Genre: Reality and Game Show

Sounds like generic reality show slop. Expect a shitload of scripted drama.

'post reality entertainment'? What about this is 'post'?

It occurs after the word reality no longer has any meaning and everything is a blurry, murky, disorganized mess of TV broadcasting.

They should call all these shows 'Beautiful People'.

I want to see a reality series with fat, sweaty, sick old people, dawgunnit.

Reminds me of "Big Brother", which runs since many years in german tv. And I bet in other countries too.

Why should anyone care about some manicured wannabees who try their luck at Broadway or on the catwalk anyway?

And with post-reality shows they mean that this is the second generation of reality shows, where it should be obvious to anyone that what is being showed isn't as realistic as once claimed, but also cut and directed and manipulated like all the other bogus on tv.

I think.

Yup, that's exactly what I thought. Only this show seems more fake.

No you don't. It's like saying that you want to play computer games where you get to sit all day behind desk and let someone else do all the cool stuff. Or watch a TV channel about trees led by an extremely unimaginative dude.

Good god, I hope this show tanks. More bullshit trying to glorify the hollywood, celebrity life.

Okay, I asked around and with 'post-reality show' tv-stations mean that the format is similar to their reality shows, but the content is beyond that (i.e. people aiming to do something special like becoming a model or marrying a millionaire).

Filthy tv jargon.
