First time out of the vault
Hey folks, sry i dont want to thread/forumshit here but i am a bit dumbfounded.

As some of you know, i earlier posted about getting NV.
Well atm, im installing my importet UK version(which arrived earliy-joy!) and after setting up my steam account the game tells me it has to prepare the files.

Ok me thinks, but then it says "steam servers too busy to handle your request" and leads me into my steam account.
Okay no panic i think, this has to be normal. I check the download tab and it tells me that it will download stuff for the next 3 hours....
WAT?

I have the game on the disc right here, i bought it to not have to download stuff...i dont quite understand whats up with that?
Why cant it take the files from the disc?!
Am i missing something here?
Some info on the matter would be greatly appreciated..i am felling a slight amount of rage right now..

I think Gabe Newell is watching you.
Its pretty warm over here right now, so i hope he enjoys an iron chest in a wifebeater.
8-)

The game should install from the disc as normal, but then Steam will auto update it to the latest patch.

It did instal but was very sneaky about it, didnt even notice it..

..6.925.9mb total update...
For the love of god, what happend to downloadable patches beeing freely available at different sources?

I know piracy is a real issue, but it always seems like the honest customers get the shitty end of the deal. Had i pirated the game and the updates(which is piss easy) i would have it set up in half an hour. And it should show that their anti-piracy efforts are fruitless in the end.

Well thx for the info, i will stay online while it does its thing and report.

Edit-1: roughly one third of the files is dl´ed. Whoop-de-do..

Edit-2: half the amount is dl´ed..this is slightly aggravating

Edit-3: on the last gig...

Edit-4: Dl done!
Started at 16:51 est
finished at 20:31 est.....

Imagine how happy i was when my copy arrived so early. Ordered it over the easter weekend, 3 days later its there. Now imagine me waiting over 3 hours for the updates...
Thx joiks!
Sry for venting ;)

Relax man, I honestly don't think something bad or unexpected will happen.

Sure Steam has its moods (especially these couple of weeks for me) but in general its stable and works well.

Yeah, i vented a bit there.. :D

I understand that i maybe just caught a busy time. I probably should rather shift my annoyance to the developers who released a game which needed such an amount of patching.
But i am not sure how i feel about beeing forced to have steam running all the time. Granted, its running in ofline modus but still im prohibited to play a game i have bought without having steam running in some way. Imagine if you had to run i-tunes to play music on your pc....

For anti-pirate reasons? Sure..
Does it stop pirates? Hell no..
Does it cause a noteworthy amount of inconvenience for me?
Sure did..
So i still say i have got the shitty end of the deal here, while pirates have all the fun.

On the other hand ive played for six hours till now and the game has been a blast and only crashed once.
So i guess i am compensated for my annoyance.
Still screw steam requirement :P

Sometimes we have to take things as they come.
Not everything, but there are matters worse than Steam.

At least one positive thing is that the game stays automatically up to date and if you have Paypal you can buy the DLCs on Steam if you don't want to wait for the physical release.

Yeah, it does have its benefits. It does make some things more easy but at the same time makes others hard.

For instance, since my steam activation yesterday i have expierenced some weird sound problems with my machine. I often disconnect my speakers and switch to a headset. My sound just stopped working all of a sudden and no matter what i did it didnt came back on. In the end it miracously started working again after i started a bunch of different applications which all produce some kind of audio output.
And just now, my sound stopped working while watching a vid in the net, despite me still beeing able to play mp3´s from my desktop with no problem. Never had such things occur before, and i have found some scarce info on folks expierencing weird sound behaivior after the last steam update. Seems to be connected with how steam takes control of your audio output for its apllications.
Doesnt really help me in liking it, as you may understand.

I just miss the olden days where gaming was much less complicated. :)

I understand were you are getting at.
And it is indeed rather questionable why Steam should influence sounds outside the games you might run through it

Personally I though Steam remained separate from the other apps functions on your computer.
This is the first time I have heard that Steam does things like this.

It would be better if in the future Steam's coders made it is so that Steam stays on 'its side of the field', but these kind of problems also happen with other software.

Well the whole move of games going from stores to online download services has been going on for some time now.
I recall walking into a local store here called Dynabyte and seeing rows and rows of PC and other games that filled most of the second and part of the third floor.

That same store now only has a small minimal row for PC games with some other space reserved for console games which they had given up years earlier when the PC gaming scene was booming.
And they can not compete with larger console game stores around like Game Mania which now has rows and rows of games.

Yeah I do miss it and that fact that you actually 'owned' a game the moment you bought it, instead of having a copies of games that only exist digital and which access can be taken away from you on a whim.

That issue sounds a bit sketchy... none of those problems occur when steam isn't running?

Too be fair, my snooping brought only scarce information and it seems that i am one of few bordercases where it caused problems.
I fiddeled a bit with priorities and dialogue between applications and my sound device and it seems to be fixed. I.e it has not occured again so far.
Could be that my settings had to adjust with steam.
I do understand however that a developer can not plan on all hard&software setups a user may use. So thats why i title this as a bordercase.

That issue sounds a bit sketchy... none of those problems occur when steam isn't running?

Nope, never had problems before. Not in that sense at least.
See, Vista is by itself not the best system to deal with switching from speakers to headphones on the fly. I read of users who had to restart their system to properly do this everytime, or employ some means of trickery. My guess is that with Steam as another "hand" in the bucket the process of recognizing the new plug became obstructed or whatever. As said, probably a bordercase due too my setup.

@The dutch ghost
Yeah man, thats something ive also seen. Only at Gamestop or large hifi/tech retailers you can see a "well" stocked row of gaming products nowadays. The smaller retailers in my town have closed up shop over time, and even the PC shops only deal with maintenance or custom machines.
I have fond memories of a beardy man who owned a games/pc shop when i was a lad. He always had the cool imported games under the counter and would host LAN sessions in his backroom. Im probably getting old. ;)

On the topic of owning a game in physical form, im very set in my ways. I just like having a case and a booklet, though NV had a crappy booklet without any fluff or neat stuff.
The trend of digitalization is not bad in itself, as it has a lot of benefits. But for a person who tried to stay away from it, it is kind of a big deal to get accustomed to.
In the "future" cd´s will probably be seen as we see vynil today, as old fashioned.

But whatever, this should be about NV. :D
Great game so far. Way more balanced and challenging than Fo3 was. Only two crashes so far, and that is a big plus when i consider what i read about it beforehand.
But as of now it feels a bit more "linear" than Fo3 was.
I mean you could pretty much do what you want and start to pick up on the main quest when you were close to the levelcap and had explored a huge part of the map. (NV´s map appears really small to me)
Now i feel a bit railroaded with the access to the northern part beeing "blocked" by deathclaws. Giant radscorpions gave me a hell of trouble i sure as heck will not mess with Dc´s at my level.
So, yeah.
I like to have a clear direction which i can follow but at the same time i feel restricted in not doing so.
Hope the game opens up more when i reach Novac.

regards

I experienced the bug from your OP too, back when I got the game in November.
I fixed it by pausing the download and revalidating the installed files. Then the download went from 7 gigs to 300mb.

Too bad I didn't check this forum two days ago. Could have saved you that 4 hour wait. ;)
