I wanted to do this for a long time, and now I'm finally doing it! This September I'm getting me a laptop! I'm 90% sure it's going to be a HP Compaq NX7000, but I want to hear your opinions. I wouldn't want to rush an investment like this.

OK, so here are the specifications:

Centrino Pentium-M 1.6 GHz
512MB DDR
40GB HDD
15.4" widescreen display
ATI Radeon Mobility 9200, 64MB
DVD/CD-RW 24x/10x/24x
56K v.92 modem, 10/100 NIC
802.11b WLAN, Bluetooth
USB 2.0, FireWire, PCMCIA
integrated SD flash media reader
Windows XP Home
weighs 6.39 lbs
battery life up to 5 hours

The price here in Croatia is around 2000 euros, and it also comes with a 12 month guarantee.

Hey Ratty-

I am just checking over at the PCWord.com site on their top rated notebooks-
Web page is http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,111647,00.asp

Best buy-
1.6-GHz Pentium M processor
• 14.1-inch screen
• 6.2 pounds
• 80GB hard drive
• DVD-ROM and CD-RW combo drive
• Price when ranked: $3099
• Current prices: $2310 to $2882
This lightweight laptop has dual pointing devices, numerous wireless-networking options, and long battery life. ( Jun 03)

I think you have to figure on what you are buying it for. We use our laptop mostly for mobile internet and word processing, and are happy with a lightweight Dell (that still smokes my desktop). My desktop is a compaq, but I doubt I will ever by one of those again- not happy with compatibility

Hmm, I don't know, I would be a bit dissatisfied with the processor speed, but it depends on what you're going to use it for.

Si? Si is Spanish, that was Croatian(or Serbian, or whatever language you speak?). But could you translate it? I'm pretty sure that talking in a different language is considered rude. :P

Yes, yes it is. I prefer it when it is...not done. Certainly not typing an entire message in a single non-English language.

That was Serbian. Serbian is very similar to Croatian. Grammar is identical. Translation of what Grim Reaper wrote would be something like:

"Go agead. Though it could really have greater speed - around 2 GHz. Greetings from Belgrade."

E, da, pozdrav i tebi, Grim! Steta sto ovdje nema vise ljudi s nasih prostora. :)

About the CPU speed, Pentium-M is incredibly fast. Centrino Pentium-M 1.5 GHz scores higher on PCMark than Athlon XP 2000+ or P4 2.0 M. Unbelievable, but true. Pentium 4m on 2GHz scores 4813 PCMarks, Mobile Athlon XP 2000+ scores 4610, and Pentium 3m 1.5 GHz scores (get this!) 4927 PCMarks! I can't explain this weird anomaly. And I also saw benchmarks that show that Mobility Radeon 9200 is faster than Geforce FX 5200 Go. ATI rocks!

Anyway, I intend to use the laptop for just about everything, but especially for gaming, watching DVDs and programming. Performance is really important to me, as well as WLAN connectivity. NX7000 really sounds too good to be true. First thing on Monday I'm gonna go to the store and check it out. I'm so excited! :D :P

I say "SI" to anything in a different language, because "SI" is the only thing I know other then 1-10 in Spanish. :P

Mohrg

thanks, I've allways been wondering what comes after six in Spanish.

Hoorah! I can count to 1000 in spanish! It's not that much more to know than counting to 10, really...

BTW procesor speed means nothing to me. The FSB (I've found) affects it far more. remember the "bottleneck" principal. everything in your PC will only go as fast as the slowest piece in their!

Of course, I know little of these "LapTops" you speak of and performance vursus cost.

And: anybody know of a good case? just for heat disapation, I dont care about looks...

Laptops aren't my first choice if I'm gaming. They're useful for LAN parties because of their sizes (though now there is a computer case the size of a Gamecube) but that's the only thing positive I can think of adverse to a computer tower and flat screen monitor. Here's the problems about gaming on a laptop: the keyboard heats up, making it uncomfortable, limited power supply (though I guess you can't really complain about that), and those dinky little touch-pad mouses (which can be fixed by purchasing a $15 USB Intelli-Eye mouse).

But then again, that's only for gaming.

Hmm, I'm assuming that you're getting a laptop because you're an engineering student and you need to commute back and forth to school so why not take your school-work machine with you right? Maybe I should try that too...

Well, I'm thinking about paying another engineering student to make me a high-quality computer mainframe. Any suggestions for where to look for products online? Or good recipies?

Oh, and guess what? This is my lucky 250th post! Let's see what my new title is...

@Gunslinger
I don't intend to use the laptop as my primary gaming machine, I'll play on it only when I'm out of town, at school or visiting my friend who happens to have a LAN. And I intend to carry my mouse wherever I go. I don't expect ultra-fast performance or ultra-comfortable gameplay, but as long as I can play Heroes III and NWN, it's good.

@Ozrat
Yes, that's the official reason. "Mom, can I get a laptop? I need it for my school!" "Of course, dear."

Sorry, dude, you'll have to reach 300 for the next rank.
Don't tell him that! ... oh well look out for the tsunami of Ozrat posts.

As for a laptop, i'd rather get a lapdance. Damn thing too fragile, and small.
