The hypotenuses of the triangles don't line up. In one of the pics this side of the whole figure bulges outward, in the other it bulges inward, accounting for the difference.

And here I am trying to figure out the slopes of the two triangles in my head rather than using the ruler trick. D'oh!

m of Red = 3/8
m of Green = 2/5

Yeah, so beause of the slope difference, you can take out a unit space to be blank and the areas add up to be equal.

EDIT: Changed it to the correct ratios. Sat through six hours of presentations today, so I'm not all there at this point.
