I'm so disheartened

First time out of the vault
Hi everyone,

This is the first time I've posted. Mainly because I fear a backlash from Bethesda fans if I post how I feel on any other forum.

Basically I've been a fan since Fallout 3 but have also played New Vegas (which I loved) and the first two.

I won't ramble on but I am so gutted that I don't enjoy Fallout 4. I tried. I really tried but it feels completely devoid of personality. I am quite an avid fan and post about Fallout a lot online (including Twitter) but I've noticed the fanbase getting younger and younger, which isn't a bad thing, but I'm starting to feel out of my element - even at 29.

There also seems to be a lot of saltiness in the Fallout (Bethesda?) community and God forbid you say you don't agree with the direction the game is going in. I've seen people being called "ungreatful" and "spoiled" etc for admitting they don't like the workshop DLC. I'm really starting to drift from it all now which is a shame because it was a fandom I enjoyed being a part of.

The final nail in the coffin though was this latest batch of DLC. I won't lie. It looks awful for a AAA game. Conveyor belts!? Build your own vault? Happy Nuka man costume?

I want to love Fallout again but part of me just thinks move on. This wouldn't be so hard if I wasn't so integrated into the community. Fallout 4 was okay, playable but I got bored easily. Far Harbor felt like the kick it needed but even then I got a bit bored.

Now this horrible looking DLC.

I guess this is part rant. I want to enjoy it again but as someone who started out on Beth games, then seeing what obsidian did (which was amazing and in what? A year? Didn't fallout 4 get 7 years Dev time?) I'm just ready to move on I guess.

At least here I can express that without feeling like Beth fans won't jump down my throat. I'm safe here...I think.

You are safe here... Unless you say something stupid with no reasoning or evidence to back it up. Most people here share your sentiment. Especially with fo4. The lore is garbage, the gameplay subpar, the role-playing nonexistent, the design decisions borderline retarded, the DLC are just as bad as horse armor, the writing often contradicts previous entries and itself, it's ultimately a lazy entry in the franchise. No one asked for this. Yet people everywhere jump to defend it. You most certainly have found your safe haven.

Hello there,
Welcome to the Forum.
I feel your pain too, I found out people bitch even if you say "Fallout 3 isn't written well, but I enjoy it as a game".

But anyway, you'll fit in here.
I should also suggest Wasteland 2 if you want a Fallout 4.
Wasteland 2 felt more like fallout tactics than proper fallout. I'm of the opinion that fallout is too unique and specific of a setting to be completely replaced.

Trust me, you've finally found a home here. I was just like you. I loved 3, loved New Vegas even more, then I played the original 2 and loved those. Now I can't even hardly look at 3 due to the majesty that is 1, 2, and NV. I too thought Fallout 4 may be a decent game, until I actually started playing it. I got 100 hours in, trying to find SOMETHING good, anything at all, and I just couldn't. But enough about Fallout 4, welcome, we hope you're here to stay.

You can say as many negative things as you like about FO4 here. Hell, we'll probably applaud you for it.

Yeah, I enjoy F3, but mostly for the DLCs these days.
I thought I would have the same thing with F4.

Well, that's money wasted on a Season Pass.

Thanks everyone.

On forums etc I am friends with a lot of people who are avid Fallout (Bethesda) fans, which is totally fine, but they will agree with what I've written above (privately - especially in terms of the DLC) but go on to defend it publicly? It's making me uneasy so I'm trying to drag myself away because I feel I can't express what I really think to these people without it dwindling into drama and name-calling.

Honestly I was so excited when Fallout 4 was announced. I went on a mass merch purchase spree, went to midnight launch...played the game finally and just felt like I'd seen it all before.

I knew a house would contain a few stimpacks, maybe a rad away and a mattress. I knew that settlement over the hill would just be filled with mutants/raiders/gholus for me to clear out. It all got old so fast and it's like...why bother exploring if you know in advance what you'll find?

Millim, I've played Wasteland 2 and loved it :)

Sorry for coming here just to let of steam! What I'd give to love Fallout again...

Yeah, even I went a Midnight Launch.
I don't regret that as it was a lot of fun to do.

But yeah, the game got old fast, and there's nothing to back it up.
At least with New Vegas, they kept it interesting by throwing new things at you.
Fallout 4 is more like "You got to find these things... but you know what they are".

I agree! I loved getting involved with the hype - so much fun and don't regret a moment. I've also met some amazing people through the fandom so I have the game to thank for that.

But the disappointment I think finally hit hard when they released info for this latest batch of DLC. Why is it so watered down? They did an amazing job for the F3 DLC - absolutely loved it! And NV was brilliant too. But...most people have expressed they don't want workshop DLC so why make more?!

Welcome around here, avoid The Order subforum and you will be safe.
Most people around here will not stone you with internet stones if they disagree with you, the most you will get is someone trying to have an interesting argument and discussion. :ok:

From what I've read of interviews with Toddie-boi it seems to me like they are far more invested in their other "two major projects that are not Elder Scrolls VI" and that that is why Fallout 4 and its DLC's turned out the way they did. I'm sure they started FO4, excited to create a Fallout game, but along the way their interest faded and it turned into a rushed incomplete sloppy mess and when it came time to create DLC's? I wonder just how many team members over at Bethesda actually works on the DLC's, maybe most of their people have moved on to the other two "big projects" and left a skeleton crew to handle FO4 DLC's because fuck it, it's Fallout! It'll sell like bottled water in Flint, Michigan!

It's cheap to produce, plus a lot of people have already bought the season pass and those that got it early (like me) will feel like they've got some kind of bargain out of it.
Also those who didn't get the Season Pass and love Bethesda more than their own family, will most likely buy each of the DLCs released for it (separately).

What Bethesda are doing is baffling, they need to the PC crowd to produce mods for their Console, yet release DLC which is better suited to Consoles, and then make a mess of a game.

Playing Fallout 4 feels like busywork. Kill the raiders/ghols/mutants collect the weapons and garbage. Sell the weapons, put the garbage in the box. It's chores

I originally came here to let off some steam too, @falloutfan1. But it turns out that This is the most civilised and intelligent community I've managed to find on the internet. and as a bonus people love classic fallout here as much as I do. That's hard to find elsewhere. NMA is my catharsis and I don't regret joining for one second.

Don't worry, all it means is you have developed a good palette for games.

I don't understand why the community just had to turn into tribalism either. I don't think Todd Howard is Jesus. I don't want to e-mail the man death threats. I don't think Bethesda are a bunch of greedy shills throwing my nostalgia in the grinder for profit. I'm just of the opinion Fallout 4 is a shitty rendition of Fallout, that's it.

It's like The Black Keys makes a tight, well constructed song,

It becomes a classic, and your favorite,

And then you go to an overpriced venue, and John Cena walks on stage, and then butchers it with his big meat hands, barely hitting the right chords, and doing his own stupid little improv solo in the middle.

And then he throws his hands up for the thunderous applause, and then everyone gives it to him.

and when you ask why, everyone's like, 'Because it's John Cena up there. You gotta clap. What, you got something against John Cena? Wanna throw down brah?', or worse.

'well he's a wrestler, not a musician, you you have to give him props for trying'.

'How dare you attack Bethesda, they give so much! THey're x1000 better than those losers at Infinity Ward, all the downvotes for this shitposter!'

'Oh, well, Bethesda are big sandbox people, not story people.'

To those responses I would always go 'okay, if I put duct tape over the company name on the box, or if Fallout 4 was made under a pseudonym, how quickly would your tune change about defending this massively flawed game?'

And, just as an unrelated aside, you know what's sad about the Nuka-World reveal trailer? I immediately knew it was pre rendered and would look nothing like that in-game simply because more than 6 NPCs were in close proximity to each other.

John Cena should stick to looking pretty. If anything he should go into the porn business because of uh.. Reasons..
(I dunno if this fits in with the analogy at all)

Hello @falloutfan1 .
Kinda late to the party but welcome to NMA where critical thinkers are more frequent than a typical forum. Hope you enjoy your time here. :salute:

:hatersgonnahate:
I've seen and had salt directed at people for admitting such things as well but I guess that's what happens if you do not accept the herd mentality. At least you've managed to notice this disturbing trend among their community.

And NV was brilliant too.
Felt obliged to point out that New Vegas was made by Obsidian Entertainment and produced by Bethesda Softworks.
