I'm trying to attach dynamite to get into the Military Base,

but every time I use the dynamite and dont set the timer it just goes on the ground and never on the pole. Is there some special way to attach it I'm not getting?

Attach the dynamite without setting the timer to the pole and then push the cart.

Don't set the timer, just put the Dynamite on the pole.

Or - to clarify above posts - right-click the pole, select inventory, select the dynamite, don't use the dynamite from your inventory (which I think is what you're doing?)

Hover over the pole, right-click and keep the button pressed, cycle to the backpack icon, this will open your inventory. Now select the dynamite. This will attach it to the pole.

That's about as basic as you can possibly get.

Wasn't it right-click to get the pointer-cursor, then left-click and keep the button pressed to get the options?

Well, left-clicking and holding will do it. Right clicking just switches between modes.
