It's pretty much like the way lightning is produced by a cloud in a thunderstorm, but instead of the collision of rain and hail, it's the collision of ash and debris from the eruption that cause the positive and negative charges to separate and as they separate the charge is released.

And yes, that lightning is pretty damn awesome. :)
 
considering the many geolocial activities under Iceland I would not be surprised if it some day will either dissapear in the ocean or end as a super vulcano.

At least the horses seem to be happy
 
Wasn't through an Icelandic volcano that Journey to the Center of the Earth was made? I mean in the book?

If so, JV nailed it big time with Iceland and the volcanic activity...
