Imagination - The cornerstone of Fallout's Universe.

First time out of the vault
So yeah, Fallout 1 and 2 were amazingly good games because we could use our imaginations more often. The people we talked to, were gritty, sketchbag social rejects of the highest standards. The locations we visited had the absolute "holy shit, this is the end of the world" ambience that we were looking for.

We could imagine all the details that we just couldnt see on those pixel-based lumps moving around on the screen. It was truly an RPG, just like the way people still play D&D on paper and pen with their friends.

Imagination is KEY.

So, Fallout 3 needs less of your imagination, more of everything is "fleshed" out more, unfortunately by fleshed out I mean that some noob is going to sit there and give you spiel about your quest in a lame voice that doesnt reflect a post nuclear wasteland at all. And the places you go are even less imaginative. But ISNT THAT THE SAME WITH THE FIRST TWO GAMES?

Yes it is. Those feral ghouls that youre shooting up underground, those are citizens of the old america that SURVIVED the initial blasts of the war and mutated over time through radiation exposure. You know how Harold is still around, its the EXACT same thing. You can all hate on this game all you want. THIS IS FALLOUT.

Its exactly what a nuclear powered america would have looked like in a burned out wasteland. Computers are nothing in that future, analog functionality is everything. Hence the reason why the old remnants of america have survived all this time in the harshness of the post glow world.

I think if youre a true fallout fan like me, you'll be more forgiving of the fact that this game really is just Oblivion with guns. No one is disputing that or denying that. But the universe your oblivioning it up in is indeed the fallout universe. Fallout 1 and 2 had their time, and they still do. GOG.com, nice.

All I can tell you fellow fans is that the TRUE Fallout universe will return, and we'll all be able to share the experience in FALLOUT ONLINE. I can gaurantee you that Fallout Online will be the greatest Fallout experience ever, and guess what it will be done by the good ol' boys of the black isle era and youre all going to have your minds blown.

Bottom line, Fallout 1 and 2 and Van Buren had their time, Fallout 3 is the best we got to tie us over, its lame and under-done in WAY too many ways, but thats why were here, thats why we all bought this game, thats why were waiting for the true fans to bring us mods to make the game more like the REAL fallout universe.

NO ONE can deny the RPG elements in Fallout 3, and I personally believe the mechanics are PERFECT for the fallout universe, all we need now is TRUE fallout content and less of this lame shit dialouge and lame cut and paste scenery(imagination, remember how EVERYTHING looked the same in fallout 1 and 2, we gotta use our imaginations to appreciate even new games, you know im right)

And to everyone that gives Fallout 3 TOO MUCH CREDIT(you know who you are), i suggest you replay the first two games so you can understand just how UNDERSTATED the atmosphere and dark history of the world is in Fallout 3. Although I must admit Content wise bethesda has done most things in true Fallout fashion, they just came up short when it came to IMMERSION in that content.

Fallout 1 and 2 are good games, youre a hero that saves the world by consequence of your action to save the people you care about. The desire to remain safely in the vault is way to understated in fallout 3. dont forget in fallout 1 they deny you reentry into the peace of the vault once you save the goddamn world of total enslavement to the master. FUCKING BETRAYERS!!!!
In Fallout 3 youre just like "stfu amata, did we ever end up doing it? maybe we should before I leave, its a dangerous place out in the wastes, maybe we should because it might be my last chance, and ive always wanted you" ETC.

Yes saying something like that is WRONG, but thats FALLOUT>?! ISNT IT?!!?!?!

that concludes my rant, hopefully i didnt offend anyone, i hope you all enjoyed it and got some entertainment out of it.

OK rant man, FOblivion is a nice shooter set in a Fallout world. The atmosphere part is ok.The RPG part isnt there.

Edited for emphasis.

We shouldn't have a need to talk about "RPG elements" in an RPG game shoud we? If we are, then it isn't really an RPG.

It's an RPG, just not the one everyone wanted.

Just so we are clear, RPG stands for something, and that is Role Playing Game. Pretty sure you do that in Fallout 3. Stop nitpicking.

I never needed imagination when playing Fallout. Everything was handed to me on plate in form of graphics and text descriptions. That's how I like it.

I like to be very definitive when it comes to my games. For example, if I want to play a FPS, i'll pull out Doom or Counter Strike. If I want to play a RTS game i'll pick up Red Alert or Warcraft. If I want to play an arcade game i'll forget about breathing because Tetris has a vice-like grip on my life. Wait.. I was going somewhere with this.

Oh right. If I pick up an RPG, I expect it to have a GURPS-like system, skills/magic system and a rediculously large amount of lore. But keeping in mind that RPG's come from P&P D&D games I expect a certain element of turn-based combat/movement and skill-throws that given the core of RPG, is almost a prerequisite for that classification.

Games with 'RPG Elements' simply do not cut it for me if they're being marketed as full blown RPG. It really under-represents the whole genre. I hate to fall to this argument but, Deus Ex isn't an RPG.. it's not a FPS; it's in a league of its own and it (fans and developers) has always maintained it as such. Perhaps if Bethesda wouldn't keep insisting that Fallout 3 is an RPG (and a sequel.. but that's a different argument) then it wouldn't be an issue.

We all compare F3 to its previous incarnations so harshly not simply because of the sequential number, but because F3 has almost entirely eschewed RPG in favour of FPS with a little stat building thrown in for good luck (a true dumpstat now). And to add insult to injury the stats and skills are largely irrelevent as well. I completed my first playthrough using a Scoped Magnum .44 and I only had 5 Perception and 35 to Small Guns, I dumped most of my points into skills I knew I wouldn't use. (Never been a fan of sneaking.. lockpick in F1 and F2 didn't seem to need more than 25 in sneak anyway.) I never had any problems with tackling the Enclave or pretty much anyone out in the wasteland.

It's like the game compensates for my character's serious inadequacies by making the game easier, perhaps to not hurt my feelings?

Imaginative? Perhaps. Conducive to enjoyable play? Not really.

I really don't understand why there are so many haters. This game is preposterously awesome.

There aren't "so many". There are a select few, who mostly hang out at this website, who just expect and desire more from their games than the average masses. Maybe leave us alone and people like you can go to the countless other websites that applaud Fallout 3's OMGREATNESS. Hey, then you'll be in good company.

In other words, go away.

Well, yes it's Fallout at 2-3%, the rest is Oblivion all the way. And don't tell is a RPG, it's feel more like e MRPF but alone...
I can't feel the RG, so it'S just a good Game.

There is no such thing.

Matter of opinion.

Isn't that nice. For you people everything is opinion, there are no facts. Must be great to live in your imaginary world where everything is possible if you think it is.

LOL. What can I say, for us people, it is truly a wonderful world. :D

Seriously, "an RPG set against an FPS background"? What the hell is that supposed to mean? Please explain.

just to prove you wrong: put your attributepoints in pointless attributes (charisma, luck, perception, strength) and max pointless skills (bartering, traps etc.) and you can still finish the game on the exact same way you would (which is logical, since there is only one way), if you would make the perfect character (which is: 10/1/7/1/10/10/1, 100% skill at repair/speech). with this much evidence even you need to conclue that the only "role" you are playing is that of a sole fighter. and if thats roleplaying for you, then every fps is a rpg.

Does it mean that you are permanently frustrated and disappointed with cRPGs just like me  ?

Deus Ex, Mass Effect, the upcoming Alpha Protocol. Those come to mind. And yes, I realize that Mass Effect is 3rd person, but that hardly matters, you still shoot things in real time.

Fallout 3 = an rpg with some FPS mechanics

STALKER = an FPS with a few RPG mechanics

i believe the distinction is pretty clear.
