Improvements over Oblivion

First time out of the vault
Well, it's obviously "Oblivion with Guns" and not the Fallout sequel I would have wanted but I still like it, and it is a massive improvement on vanilla Oblivion...

Some quick highlights:

* VATS
* better sense of purpose and back-story.
* immersive atmosphere and setting.
* NPCs are way more life-like AND interesting.
* better scenery and artwork, less repetitive.
* doesn't seem quite as console-ish as unmodded Oblivion.
* the quests are more interesting and not so much fed-ex-ish.
* more karma choices (although the Mid-Western Good/Bad morality dichotomy is annoying, I prefer to RP a character within shades of gray)

Things I wish they had kept from Oblivion?

* creative options like spell crafting and item enchanting (altered for a post-nuke theme, obviously no magic).
* LARGE cities
* larger gameworld that doesn't feel cramped with too much stuff.
* alchemy!

Anything else?

I'm surprised you don't have the improved enemy scaling on that list.

But it's not "obviously Oblivion with Guns."

EDIT: I also like the lockpick minigame.

Does it matter? What they did 'better than Oblivion' shouldn't matter. They should be two games that you can't even compare due to the large differences between the games.

I wont compare them simply because that gives the idea that making a new TES using some of the FO lore is actually an 'improvement'

never saw that in Oblivion, as I played it straight away with mods like Obscuro's Oblivion Overhaul.

the only major difference is setting/story.

Frankly I liked Oblivion more. It kept me interested for a few weeks I believe, and FO3 has got me bored after only a few days, and I'm not even done with my first playthrough.

That isn't to say I prefer TES setting over FO, I most certainly do not. It's just that I don't think Bethesda did a very good job with FO3. It really does feel like an Oblivion rehash more than a FO game.

I couldn't take playing Oblivion, as for some reason, all the npc's reminded me of escaped mental patients. It's not that bad in fallout 3, but still pretty bad at some times.

I miss having bigger cities though : /. Fallout 3 gives the impression that there is nothing more than megaton and rivet city. Which are both medium sized towns at best.

You can say it about 99% of other games if you like it or not they are very similar mostly only setting/story makes them difreant about Fallout 3 i like it and Oblivion i dident...

Tell me you saw any orginal game in years 2000-2008 that you couldent compare to any other title?

Psychonauts?

TPP with elemtents of action and adventure yes its really orginal...they should make it game of the year...of course im sarcastic...its just TPP with colorfull graphics...

If we go this patch Baldurs Gate & Icewind dale are similar games something like Fallout3 and Oblivion and we know its not true...

One thing they didn't do better was NPC facial expressions. They are still just as flat and uninteresting as ever. Also, I wasn't very happy with the PC face and hair options. I know it's the wastelands, but my character DID grow up in the vault, yet for a nineteen year old he is so very old looking.

Alchemy? I don't think that has any place in Fallout.

The Oblivion world was so much larger than the Fallout one, which is kind of annoying. I feel slighted somehow by that. I expected that they'd at least have ONE major town in the game.

I think with "alchemy" he meant creating useful drugs from ingredients you can gather from the world around you, similar to what you could talk Myron into doing in Fallout 2.

yeah, exactly, also some options for creating additional custom weapons or items with junk found around the wasteland.

Actually, as someone posted earlier, the differences between Oblivion and Fallout 3 are quite similar to Baldur's Gate 2 and Icewind Dale - same game, different story. I like the fact that in FO3, though, that NPCs seem so much more alive and interesting... Oblivion seemed to be populated with undead, and I didn't really care whether they lived or died....

I'm not sure because I never brought the weird science chemical set, but couldn't you make stuff with it as well as cure addictions?

I don't think flour was there for no reason unless it was for that nuka pie?

You just tell it to make something and come back in 24 hours to find some random chem. Seriously. That's it.
