Are we speaking about some 'artists' or 'programmers' ?
I know quite a few artists and let me tell you that the payment isn't much better in their industry than in the computer industry. Especially if you're not one of the big-names.
Tons of art (comics; cartoons and such) are done in asia today,...
And a 'safe-income' project (for three years) can be much better than a unsafe artwork-by-artwork basis...
But let us forget about that a moment, it is his first real job in the indstury, so let us talk about passionate when he's working on his third or so... okay?
