Installing Win2k

Currently I'm running Win98. As my computer hasn't been running too well lately for various reasons, I'm thinking that I should format the whole drive and install 2000. However, I'm also running Linux on another partition of the drive, but there is no boot manager at the moment so to start Linux I use a boot disk.
Will installing Win2k interfere in any way with Linux?

Well if you've got it so you're using a boot disk, I don't think it will affect it. I would backup what is important however just in case. Just download one of those GNU CD burning programs (if you have a CD-R) and backup the files you need.

Oh yeah, unless it would be a royal pain, I'd back up all your data/important files from your C drive and format it before installing Win2k.

Then when the drive is formatted, take a boot disk with a copy of Smartdrv.exe on it (get it out of an old DOS directory or off your Win98/Win95 CD) and run it using these command line parameters before running the WinNT program in the i386 directory (the Win2k DOS installer):

SMARTDRV 4096 /B:4096

or just:

SMARTDRV 4096

Then you're ready to do the DOS installation on a clean drive.

Ah yes, finally, you can bypass entering in your Serial Number by going into your i386 directory of the installation CD (provided you copied it to your hard drive, which I would suggest), and opening up the file SETUPP.INI

You will see something like:

[Pid]
ExtraData=6E797875766D79686E691614846D8A
Pid=51873000

Just edit the last three digits of the Pid string and change them to 270:

Pid=51873270

Now you don't have to enter in your serial number.

That's what I said I was gonna do.

Why? I know what smartdrv does.

You mean, just boot off the win2k cd and install?

I assumed you didn't.

No, boot off a boot disk, go to your WinNT directory on your hard drive and install off that. It's much faster than using a CD and also Windows will look for drivers on your hard drive instead of your CDROM.

So what's the point of loading it? You mean the installation will go faster?

On my newly formatted hard drive? Yes, WinNT directories always appear magically when you format a Win98 drive.

Anyhow, details of the installation I'm not really interested in. I was just wondering if Win2k will overwrite something of the Linux partition. I've heard that it overwrites any boot manager you might have.

Hmm.. if you know what smartdrv does why are you asking me this? You obviously don't. Yes, it speeds up file accesses.

Sweaty, I expect you have something called a "brain" inside your head, but I'm getting the impression it is smaller than I previously assumed.

I mean, isn't the solution obvious? Copy the directory to your hard drive. I expected you'd look beyond what was written to what was implied, guess not.

But you've already said you're not using one, but instead a boot disk, so what's the problem here?

Hey, flaming is not allowed in here! You have been warned!

I think I'll just install off the cd as the sane people do it. Less trouble; it's not like I'm in a real hurry and need the extra 15 minutes.

Yeah, but you never know with windooze. It might overwrite something else too, because it can.

It's only flaming if it's untrue. :)

I do it so I don't have to bother with inserting the CD in the drive everytime the computer needs a driver or something else.

Yeah, but Linux is installed on an entirely different partition, so unless Windows chooses to rewrite the partition table and screw the entire hard drive up, it won't. I think Windows can be set up to multiboot to your Linux partition too.

Just don't install Windows 98 or something like that after you install Win2k, or it will mess up the multiboot.
