Insufficient space error

DallasRaines42

First time out of the vault
When playing Fallout 1, I am repeatedly getting an error telling me I have insufficient space to save map, at which point it quits to the load screen... There is plenty of space on the drive, so what is going on?

Ok, well, the game worked fine on this system before, so I know my system can run it. I have a PIII 800mhz, nvidea geforce 2, 360ram, and 10 gigs free on the drive with fallout. I installed F1 manually, and installed the patch as well.

Insufficient Disk Space Error
------------------
When you get that message it's either:
A. You are really running low on diskspace and should free up some, or
B. Your config files misguide you.

The following solution is for the latter and was proven to work for both FO1 and FO2.

In your Fallout directory find the fallout.cfg file and open it with Notepad.
Note: Your file may look slightly different from the one listed below.

[system] <-----look under this paragraph
art_cache_size=130
cdlock=C:\Programs\mIRC\download\cdlock.dat
color_cycling=1
critter_dat=C:\Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2eng\critter.dat
critter_patches=C:\Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2eng\data
cycle_speed_factor=1
executable=game
free_space=20480 <---------- find this line and change the value to 0(zero) hashing=1
interrupt_walk=1 language=english master_dat=C:\Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2eng\master.dat
master_patches=C:\Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2eng\data
scroll_lock=0
splash=3
times_run=5

I already tried that, my fallout.cfg reads:

[system]
art_cache_size=196
color_cycling=1
critter_dat=c:\games\fallout\critter.dat
critter_patches=C:\Program Files\games\Fallout\data
cycle_speed_factor=1
executable=game
free_space=0
hashing=1
interrupt_walk=1
language=english
master_dat=c:\games\fallout\master.dat
master_patches=C:\Program Files\games\Fallout\data
scroll_lock=0
splash=5
times_run=5

OK... I suppose that there are no read-only files in your save game directory either?

OK, I'm in a cul de sac here. You've got a configuraation similar to mine, so it must work. I remember a similar bug, but I've always managed to get past it, only I don't quite remember how.

Tell you what: Does the error appear during load or save? Try starting a new game just for the sake of seeing if it persists. Make sure that there is no garbage in the Fallout/data/maps directory (to my mind , it should be empty, if it isn't, save games can't extract there.) If all else fails, try reinstall. I can't help you any further, sorry.

I've seen this before.

However I didn't see a permanent fix. It seemed that sometimes it would run if you keep clicking on it, and sometimes not.

Also, check your virtual memory settings, they might be interfering somehow.

OK , the maps directory isnt empty, Ill try emptying it and running F1, the error occurred first when i tried to leave rat cave the first time, and then again immediatly upon comppletion of character creation

Whenever I encountered a bug that seemed to have no solution, uninstalling and re-installing is what I did. And it always worked.

Are you try install game in "full installation" mode? I had similar problems when half of game was loaded from CD and half - with HDD.

And I always playing in FO1 on my Windows XP in "Windows 95 Compatibility Mode".

I had that problem running Fallout on NT, 98, and ME, on Xp i dont bother with the compatibility modes and it works great. The instalation size doesn't matter, it only changes the load speeds. Uh, check to file path that the save/load commands are directed to.
