Interplay has finally opened a forum board for V13

i checked the forum aaaand......nothing new.
I hope they will give a update on the situation soon, though i doubt they would open a forum for a project that will "end" within few days.
Of course it could be the last attempt to make it look like they are actually going to do it...
I hate this sort of uncertainty.

Well, anyways, it was about damn time they opened a forum board for the project.

Actually if you haven't seen it, the previous post on the main page of NMA shows that Interplay has signed a deal with Masthead Studios to secure the funding they need to make Bethsofts deadline. So things SHOULD be on track I'd hope.

No, they have a deal with Masthead to codevelop Project V13, it is only presumed that Masthead is covering the needed expenses at this point.

Interplay Entertainment Corp. (OTC Bulletin Board: IPLY) announced today that the company has signed a binding letter of intent with Masthead Studios to fund the development of a Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG), code named "Project: V13."

I thought that 'fund the development of a massively multiplayer online game' was more than a presumption as it was quoted from the article. If I miss understood then ok sorry for misleading you patton.

That forum is a pain for anyone used to at least some kind of forum comfort ....
Well, registered anyway. Probably it will change.

How so? It's phpbb3, pretty standard stuff.

Is there are particular problem that you ran into? If so, let me know and I'll look into it.

Thanks!

I'm almost ashamed to admit that I'm getting a lot more excited about the prospect of FOOL. I haven't even considered suscribing to an MMORPG since UO. I blame the fact that Chris is on the project and how dissapointed I was with F3.

I'm not a particular fan of MMO's, nor do I see quite how a Fallout MMO will work, but I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this.

Oh, and a brand spanking new soundtrack by Mark Morgan plz ;)

The problem is not phpbb3 or technical problems, it is the way it is presented/designed:

- I don't like the colours. I am used to much darker colours. Personal thing, yeah....
- Forum posts are separated only by their background (light blue and not-as-much-light blue, could at least be a bit more difference in there)
- The different parts of the posts (title, message, signature) aren't separated at all, only by the size/colour of the text
- Name and stuff about the poster on right side? Wtf? The most common thing (and that actually has a reason) would be on the opposite site
- HUGE borders on both sides of the forum. Is probably supposed to look professional, but is a simple waste of space AND makes it look a bit boring
- No avatars? At all? Come on....
- Very few sub-forums. Makes reading through the threads not that much fun

I could find much more, I guess...
Anyway...Combined, everything makes the forum look more like a large, clean Word 2007 document or a guestbook than like a real forum.

Here is an example of a forum that is also supposed to look bright and professional done right. Good use of space, clearly separated posts, topics, etc...

You're seriously nitpicking, man. Even by NMA standards.

As a regular in Interplay's forums, I'll just share my thoughts here.

- I like the color's used in the in forum. It gives it a clean look and feel, as opposed to gaming forums in general which look pretty trashy I must say.

- Forum posts could be given a wee bit more contrast but not a big deal.

- Parts of the post are fine the way they are.

- Name and posts on the right side are a good idea. It makes the forum more content-centric and less poster-centric.

- Nothing wrong with the border, though you could fit a little bit more content in the posts if they were a touch wider. (Not a problem either way)

- Avatars would be cool, but are completely unnecessary at this stage. Maybe you could grant posters the privilege after a minimum number of posts. (maybe)

- No opinion on the sub-forums.

-Basically a dark skin is always a nice option as some people prefer light and others dark, not that I'm too picky myself.
-Poster information on the right isn't standard on any board I go to, though I know there are skins that use it. Again, an alternate skin with poster info on the right would be nice but I'd say is even less important than having a dark skin.
-Subforums are a great organizational tool and should be applied where necessary. Most company forums that I've visited have failed to use them properly seemingly because they're afraid of them. Subforums can be overused as well, something which is a bigger concern with smaller communities than it is with larger ones. The V13 boards don't seem to have enough posters yet to merit a subforum so right now, it's good.

I don't have a problem with anything else. Avatars are hardly necessary and not having them is, I'm sure, a money saver, though I admit that I tend to notice and remember people better when they have an avatar (though I think that's more because of the prevalence of avatars than anything else). I like the clean layout of the forum and don't mind the wasted space so much, especially since most forums (including NMA) have a limited workspace for typing messages anyway (so I don't mind reading them being in a limited space as well).

It sounds like a new, darker theme would be what the doctor ordered. We have to do some custom tweaks to any theme that we use to support the Interplay stuff at the top of the page, which is why we don't currently support more themes.

Without promising anything, I'll ask about adding another theme.

Avatars: They didn't want to add them. It was a conscious decision to keep out non-Interplay themed avatars. If we do add them, it won't be for a while and they will probably be ones that we provide.

Sub-Forums: That's my call. We didn't get enough traffic at the beginning to justify more than the ones we started with. If you have a particular subforum in mind, let me know. If I agree with you, I can add it at anytime.

Thanks for the feedback...

pax,

I've been on enough forums (some of which use phpbb) to understand the difficulty of doing this as it really sounds a lot easier than it is (or so I've been told). Thanks for the inquiry :D.

That's understandable, images tend to eat up a lot of bandwidth.

Again, I don't think that your V13 board is big enough to warrant it yet but eventually at least a subforum for suggestions might be necessary if you get enough traffic as it tends to be the main cause of clutter that I see on boards (check out Valve's TF2 forums for an extreme example, especially around update time). Seeing as the V13 board is the only one I've posted on and paid any attention to, that's all I can say and I'll certainly send out a shout if I think that you've gotten to that point, assuming that a thread hasn't already started up with reasonably folks requesting it. Don't want to put to wagon too far ahead of the horse here ;).

Thanks for stopping by Chris, it's always appreciated. :ok:

It sure is - little gestures like that are appreciated indeed ... The symbolic value of such behaviour is underestimated by so many developers.
