Music 4 Games has a treat for fans of classic Fallout: an interview with Mark Morgan, the soundtrack composer for Fallout 1 and 2. Here's an interesting tidbit:
M4G: What has been your favorite project thus far, and why?
Mark Morgan: I still think the Fallout series because I was given wide latitude with some guidelines but very few restrictions to create what I envision would fit the Fallout world. At the time I was experimenting with a lot of ambient music and the fun aspect of the Fallout score was to blend a kind of odd ethnic, tribal and industrial sound design into something not only musical, but emotional.

According to Morgan, Bethesda never even tried to contact him about Fallout 3.

But they're huge fans of the original games. Just ask them, they'll tell you.

I wonder if Interplay will contact him about FOOL, assuming that FOOL will ever see the light of day.

Now, there's genius!
I still get shivers down my spine everytime I listen to Fallout's score.
Good memories :D

in doing that, he did a great job.
i still have the cd with the wav files i ripped from the game years ago and listen to it when i drive

Ah, finally an interview with someone who's not a complete piece of shit! I like these ones much better, even if they are far and few between.

My only question to Mark would be... when can we buy the new mastered Fallout soundtrack cd?

/Edit: Maybe I should try to ask him...

Bethesda really fucked the dog in not hiring Mark Morgan to do the soundtrack.

But those heroic orchestral pieces really fit in the game.

[/irony]

Good interview, listening to soundtrack highlights how bad music in video games has become. This soundtrack had character and gave it to every location in the game.

yeah, but thank god one on the PC has the chance to remove this "orchestral" garbage they call Fallout soundtrack in Fallout 3 and replace it with the nice sounds of Morgan :3 !!!!

Isnt it awesome to be a Fallout purist ... :P

Damn, I couldn't have put it better even if I tried.

Here's hoping we hear alot more from Mr Morgan in the future :)

Been giving PST a replay and his style fits it like a glove.
His work adds so much to the atmosphere and vibe of games like Torment and Fallout. I really think they would be vastly different experiences without his contribution. Maybe even PS:T moreso since it has some set piece/expositions that are so unique and quirky, and integral to defining the whole feel, the pathos of that game.

Yeah, contrast that with Bethesda's hamfisted shoe-horning of that epic, heroic LoTR orchestral shit from FO3.
They're oblivious.

Would you really like to hear his music in that kind of game? I think they did wise choice. The less anything in that game has to do with real Fallouts the better.

People already started making an alternative soundtracks to FO3, which are more like Morgan's music.

I played Fallout 3 once before I installed the music replacer. All I can remember of the Fallout 3 score is it is incredibaly generic.
