Is Skyrim any good?

The constant references to Norse mythology get tiring quickly and, a lot of the quests are 2 dimensional but that can be fixed with mods and, boy are there some good Skyrim mods.

First of all, you need to put this in the General Gaming Forum, not General Discussion.

Second of all I'd say it's a good game. Quite a few quests are linear but there's lots of them, the factions in the game are fun to me, combat's fairly solid, the graphics are really nice, and the DLCs certainly add to the experience by quite a large margin unlike FO4's so far.

Is it an RPG? Not so much, considering there isn't really a cap on what you can master. You pretty much start out being a jack of all trades but a master of none. Unlike, say, Morrowind, where for a long time you're pretty much stuck in a niche role (such as Thief, Assassin, Mage, etc) Skyrim gives a lot more flexibility in what you can be. Some people would see this as a good thing, a lot of others don't as it doesn't give much incentive to RP as a certain class of character.

The other problem is that you can become the owner of literally every guild/faction in the game and there's no limit on that either, unlike, once again, Morrowind. In Morrowind you could only join one of the 3 Great Houses for instance, and depending on the one you joined, that would effect the rest of your game. Not so in Skyrim, in Skyrim everything's wide open. You can be a dual wielding barbarian and still join the Mage's College.

I'm just about to give up on noobs ever starting threads in the correct forum these days.

There's not much of a limit to the factions and groups you can join in Morrowind, either, besides the Great Houses (and you can't join both the Imperium and the Stormcloaks in Skyrim). But in Morrowind you have to have certain skills to progress through the ranks of your guild, so it's significantly harder for a barbarian to become archmage.
And, of course, it usually takes more than four quests to become leader of the guild...

It's tedious, repetitive, predictable and stale.
So no, I would not say that Skyrim is any good.
In fact I'd say that it is one of the most overrated pieces of shit in gaming history.

But the mods Mr. Fish, the mods! That said if you're playing on console then you're going to be stuck in one of the most boring, repetitive games in existence, one in which your character build doesn't matter, your actions are minimal and, can only be carried out in a single way.
Mods are great though, entirely worth the purchase if it's on PC.

Then the mods are great. But Skyrim isn't.
It's like, Skyrim is a fucking awful sexual partner but the whipped cream and vibrator I got on the side are damn enjoyable. Doesn't make Skyrim any better of a sexual partner, it just means I'm trying to drown it out with accessories that I actually 'do' enjoy.

And even with mods I don't see how Skyrim can be fixed. I've yet to find a mod that overhauls all quests to give players more quest solutions. Dungeons will still be repetitive as shit and since that's what the game is focused on you'll still have to deal with them. I suppose combat could be improved but it'd require a complete and total overhaul in every way to make it more survival oriented as the damage sponges makes the game awfully tedious and I simply can't be arsed to get those mods because what's the point in playing the game for combat if there is never any pay-off? There are way better combat focused games to play that do have a pay-off. Such as a good story or at the very least proper rewards. And you'd need a mod to replace dialogue so that everyone doesn't sound like a clone. And that's going to be a big fucking mod in terms of file size and considering I'm running on limited internet data I don't want to waste it on that.

Ultimately, for me, everything needs to be modded just to make the game bearable. And why go through all of that hassle when it would be far easier to just throw the game in a bin and play something else. Like dress-up games on NewGrounds.

Mods should be icing on an already delicious cake. A cherry on top. Something to give it a bit more flare. It shouldn't be obligatory to fix the game. So is 'Skyrim' any good, not mods, but Skyrim on its own? And the answer to that question is no. No it is not. It is awful.

Skyrim is a modding platform if you would want it for that but it's a shallow grindy dungeon crawler with even less features then its predecessors.

In short, Morrowind = Skillfully crafted RPG, Skyrim = Piece of shit you shouldn't waste time with (unless you plan on modding the fuck out of it to the point where it's no longer even recognizable as the same game).

I can understand why newer generations of gamers like it though. I grew up with a Playstation 1 and Windows 95. Metal Gear Solid was the third(?) console game I had ever played, and it blew my mind as a kid. The in-depth story for a PS1 game at the time was just insane. Final Fantasy 7 (and also six for the SNES) also took up hours of my time as a kid. On the Windows 95 I had games like Ages of Empires 1 (and later 2), Fallout, Red Alert 1, and good ole' Rollercoaster Tycoon (the very first one). Those were my friends. Those are just some examples of the games I grew up with.

If you grew up with games in the mid 2000's though (like 04' onwards), I have no doubt that the gaming industry taught you that things like graphics and massive amounts of variety to your gameplay were valued things for a game to have, rather than proper programming, decent storylines, etc. In short gaming took on a more simplistic train of thought.

An enjoyable hack-and-slash but a poor rpg. Don´t forget to use a shitton of mods, but, install script extender first and I personally recommend skyUI. It makes inventory management much easier.

Interesting NPCs is also a must have, for me at least. You might want to install a couple of ENBs since Skyrim looks a little outdated now.

I've played Skyrim and modded it to shit, and it still fucking suuuuuucked. Not recommended. Very tedious, silly one dimensional factions, hurr duurrr dragons, all dungeons look alike, boring loot, boring npc's, boring terrain, boring mobs, everything's boring.

Damn, even Oblivion was more fun.

Okay, I played Skyrim on console and I have to say, it's okay.
It's really not the great game everyone makes it out to be.
I mean, I enjoyed my time on Oblivion more but sadly for a game that looks this good, it's just boring.
Every quest is boring.
Every NPC is boring.
Even the DLC was pretty boring.

I think I did everything with a level 23 character, I'm not too sure.
I've put in about 75 hours and just thought "I'm done with this now".

As I said, it's a pretty boring game.
Beautiful to look at, but it sadly doesn't have much personality.

It's...

Um...

Unique.

Skyrim has very little in the way of plot or good writing. There are a few stand-out quests, but sadly it just kinda has many of the same problems that Fallout 4 has. I feel it's a fun little dungeon crawler, but beyond that? It's not the perfect 10/10 game so many people make it out to be. I think it's around a 6.5 - 7/10, but that's just me.

Also, I played it unmodded on console. That led to a few big issues.

Depends. What are you looking for?

If you want an RPG with intricate character creation, fun loot, deep combat and interesting characters, well, you're not going to find it in Skyrim.

If you want an action-RPG with a fairly addicting core gameplay loop, rewarding exploration, altogether good world building and literally 2 characters that are anywhere near interesting, that's basically how I would most charitably describe Skyrim.

Overall, I'd say it's a pretty decent game, Bethesda's best since Morrowind. But nothing great. Some mods are really good, but that's mostly a band-aid. You're going to install them, marvel at how much better than vanilla it is, then after an hour or two shut the game down again because under all the luster and new stuff, it's still the same old Skyrim with the same old boring characters and same old repetitive combat and same old unfulfilling character progression.

I wouldn't say it's a terrible game. Oblivion was a terrible game. Skyrim is just slightly above mediocre.

I'm thinking of playing it.

Is it an rpg? Is it a good game?

As I've said a billion times before, if you're legitimately asking, provide examples of what kind of games you like. I think you already have once but I forgot in which thread, so I suppose just do it again.
