Is there even anyone still modding/honestly playing FOT?

I dont see it very difficult to create a mod like the original game.
Not hard, but a lot of hard (sometimes boring and tedious) work though. And frustrating, very frustrating especially when you run into a road block due to the hard coded limitations (and you will, alot).

Merged with similar thread.

It's not really hard to create a mod... But like Requiem said... It's limited in a lot of ways so the only thing that you can basicly do is to stick with the editor and do some little trick here and there with some well placed triggers.

On the other hand... Doing everything alone will slow you down. I've mastered a lot of mapping and trigger skills so I can do a lot of maps on my own... but... If you want to take it a little further to modding you also want to add custom sprites and tiles... Now I can't even get Spray to work and I know jack crap about alpha channels and images in photoshop and all that crap so making custom sprites is mt weakness... Let's not even speak about making custom tiles.

Give me a custom tiles set and I'll make you some really cool maps... but don't ask me to make sprites and tiles...

So long story short... If you get some people together and they don't leave after 2 weeks and suddenly drop from the face of the earth or just aren't motivated enough to do their part... yeah, making mods is easy...

When you gotta do everyone on your own... Take into account that a lot of people still have jobs, goto school, girlfriend, friends... wanna get smashed during the weekends... Then making a mod id hard :D

Anyways... I'm still picking up pieces for the project I'm working on. It's really promising and it will be a lot more detailed then FOT original ever was... there is a lot more detail in the maps and it will feature a lot more RPG elements with dialogue and questing and side missions... But yeah... it's hard to do it on my own... that's the only reason it's not finished... I have a life and I can't spend so much time on the project and I barely have people that help me out... However... I do have people I can contact for some custom work as sprites but the help is limited.

And if you bothered to stop whinging long enough to read other people's posts you'd see there's two other sprite editors now.

Pot calling the kettle black there Snake, the biggest complaint I've heard from people who've worked with you is that you disappear and don't answer emails. Like clockwork, it's been six months so Snake's back.

Like how long it took to get you to get down and do some of you own work?

Does it still have the uber 'Snake' prefab who could win the whole game with one arml tied behind it's back?

You can say all you want... But at the end of the day you're just killing a lot of motivation.

I'm not gonna get into a discussion with anyone about the past of this project.

Like I said, if people drop half way through the work they promised to deliver I basicly dismiss the promises and move on, I have had only one dedicated team member on this project so far and he's been kind enough to let me know that he won't be doing anything on modding on FOT again... As sad as it was, atleast he let me know.

For all the other people, they dropped off the face of the earth first... I always answer my emails, if not the very same day, 1 or 2 days after... very simple... it's always easy to blame one person together. Of all mappers I have received one finished map, all the other work that was promised never made it, I never gotten any emails saying they quit. Don't blame me for not whipping their asses and email them everyday asking for the stuff they promised... it's quit obvious when someone doesn't reply and after weeks still nothing... I put in my math, put one and two together...

I have no shame in saying that I've been very de-motivated by some people, the constant promises of help that never came, yeah, it de-motivates me... I'm not making this mod for myself alone.

Anyways... I've been working on it with Amaru, he wanted to take it over but after seeing some of the stuff he's been working on together with another guy who made some excellent sprites and tiles, I've decided to pick it up again... We're doing some stuff here and there, finishing up everything that's been done so far... Basicly 5 mission maps, 1 bunker map, tons of sprites and tiles, a lot of interesting RPG elements... I got a really good impression from what I've seen... It's grown a lot since I left it alone and I'm willing to give it another shot.

I personally have had a really hard time reguarding school, work and personal life... I'm not gonna get into details but it required me to leave all my computer and game related stuff...... And...... I do not have to explain myself to anyone, on the internet for crying out loud, for all the stuff that goes on in my personal life. The only thing that you have to know is that certain stuff happened and it required me to leave certain things behind.

No... I was not in jail or rapped by an angry mutants... :)

I'm willing to pick up the stuff that is worth getting done... I will no longer depend on outside help, one thing I've learned :) I will however, do this at my own tempo. As I said before, I got school, work, girlfriend... so yeah, that limits my time.

Requiem... I'm using a lot of your stuff, lI've picked up a lot's of help and tips from you... Just one question... Did you make the camo layout for FOT? Cause I'm kinda using it and I've been looking for the maker since like 5 years... and recently I saw that the download had your name on it... So I assume it's yours.

Don't go yelling at me again please... All you have to know is that Amaru has been doing a lot of stuff while I was gone and we're doing it together again now and hopefully life won't distract me enough to finish it... or... atleast some of the work that we've got.

I won't make any promises... but when I disappear it's usually for a good reason. I'll send you a postcard when it happens again, but never think I owe anyone any explaination on the how, why and the when's... I owe no-one anything here.

But it's good to see you around, you might just be the most loyal Fallout fan there is.

P.s: No, it doesn't have the Snake character anymore, Amaru changed that and it was only for the stupid ass sucking demo version that actually never intended to be anything more then a test thing... It's not really anything related to the project we're working on now, just that it carries the same name with a DEMO tag behind it. It's stupid actually... but it was more a test...

Anyways... This is what's done so far... When everything is at 100% we're considering releasing it and be done with it... unless it motivated us even more to continue with it... But we could atleast release a few very nice maps and missions with a lot of new stuff that would be worth something.

This is what is done so far:

Non Mission Related:
Entities: 75%
Speech: 50%
Tiles: Done
Sprites: Done
Sounds: Done
Music: Done
Layout: Done

Phase 1:
Bunker01: 90% - Needs Triggers, Entity & Speech Work.
Mission01: Done
Mission02: Done
Mission03: 80% - Needs Small Tiles & Entities placement & Triggers.
Mission04: 70% - Needs Triggers, Speech & Entities.

I would like to add that the project right now contains a lot of quests, side missions and a lot of stuff that the player can unlock by following up RPG elements, offcourse, the project was build to focus on the missions, they are not required but there is a lot of stuff in it that players can do outside the missions... Basicly, too long a list to name everything... Think about places people can goto when they have finished certain quests and the reward would be the location of an area that the player can goto to find extra items, weapons and unlock extra playable characters.

Offcourse... I don't have a team of people behind me that think of all the crazy quests... I would love putting in the amount of quests that a normal RPG has but FOT is still mission based, or, atleast our project is... so, it's pretty time consuming to put together quests and side missions, but there are a few that allows players to get some extra XP and some rare stuff that's not accessable by just playing the mission based campaign.

Ok... I've talked enough... I'm going to bed...

Geez...
I just wanted to check how FoT looks, to get some ideas for my BG2 tactical TC and now...
I don't know why, but I installed my old mod that alters missions, recruits and items and started editing weapons, etc.

It's horrible - the worst thing is that this game has so much lost potential...
It would be a great game if they cared about the Fallout canon and made a better combat system...

I don't know why I started modding it again - I know that I can't change much because of sounds and graphics :( .

I go back and play it from time to time, but have yet to finish it. In my opinion it's not horrid, but it has a high frustration level for me. Maybe I'm spoiled by the one shot/one kills you can achive in the other FO games, but it seems that every time you find a decent weapon it's already obsolete. So most combats go slooooooow as you plink away doing relatively tiny amounts of damage. Combine that with the 2-4 random encounters per map square, and I don't really last long with it.

But like I said, maybe I'm spoiled. Or just not strategically-minded enough. Or whatever. Someday I'll get all the way through it.

???

Sounds and graphics are really evil people preventing you from modding? Or you're not graphically minded and can't make new art?

The only thing that can't be changed now is the engine.

The second. I used the Fallout 2 sprite pack to replace weapons, but there's nothing more I can do to make it more canon, because the rest would require either making new graphics or recording new voices.

So, for some reason I'm working on a mod that I will never publish XD .
Anyway, I find modding and playing the first part of the game very enjoyable.
Too bad that Microforte didn't follow the canon and Interplay didn't allow to finish it, because a less bugged, canon following FoT would be a great addition to Fallout series.

Which (sadly) doesn't change much, because it seems that there are no professional 3D artists willing to make new character/creature models/animations and new vehicles.

Well, tactics aren't about hitting people tens of times and using tens of stimpacks - tactics are about hitting people and no getting hit ;) .
I'm playing with a FT version of my FDM, so I don't have that problem ;) .

Well, yeah. It's not so much that I find it too difficult, just too slow-moving. I can do the cover/sneak/snipe/whatever. But after the fourth or fifth (or twenty-ninth  ) headshot on a raider I start going "Oh, for ****'s sake, DIE already! I got 20 more of you to take out before I can walk to the next ****ing building!" Then having to do that a few dozen times between missions, and my patience wears thin. Maybe next time I'll cheat up my Outdoorsman to 500% or something so I can dodge that part.

Yeah, it's pretty horrible. I prefer games like X-Com or JA2, where hitting people really counts.

Heh :) . I just deleted it from my hard-drive in order to stop it from eating my time :D .

I am currently working on a mod for tactics, I've added new sounds, weapons, sprites and updated a few of the special encounters. I would love to help on a community project or tc with a team. I also have experience using 3dsmax to a limited degree.

Even after the fall I'm still here. Lately I just re-installed Awaken mod for FoT on Vista 32bit, surprised it worked. Now I just have to remember how to use the editor to modify released mods, I seem to be having difficulty in loading the weapons folder.

Although Fallout 2 on Vista is just way to nutz.

Im still modding it and playing it, me and some friends have created an epic strategy game using tactics to resolve the individual clashes, and a pen and paper wargame to do the strategy stuff. Amazing fun.
