Is Tyranny Obsidian's Way of Getting Around Bethesda?

Ragemage

Wept for Zion
I don't know if anyone else feels this way, but it seems to me that Tyranny might be Obsidian's way of bypassing Bethesda's iron grip on the Fallout franchise. A looot of the game almost seems to point to an alternate New Vegas where the Legion won.

I say this, because, for one thing, Obsidian never really got to do anything with the Legion in FONV. They had so much planned with Caesar and his Merry Men but were unable to implement more than 3/4ths of it thanks to Bethesda screwing them with time constraints. It seems to me this may be their way of making more Legion content but in a way that slips under Bethy. Why is it medieval? Because setting a game about the Legion winning in a post-apocalyptic universe would be too obvious. Since Bethesda owns the license this also means they own all of New Vegas properties as well, including the Legion, as sad as that is. Therefore, if Obsidian simply tried using assets from New Vegas in their own post-apocalyptic IP, Bethesda would probably sue their asses. It seems like a really clever way to slip under the radar and still make the game they want.

As another example of why I think this is Obsidian's attempt to make more Legion content without pissing off the "Beth", the faction you're sided with looks EXACTLY like the Legion. Look at this:

All the guards are wearing Legion colors. But focus on the guy on the bottom left specifically. He looks exactly like a Veteran Decanus:

Conspiracy I tell you! I could be completely wrong but I dunno, that's what it looks like to me. If I'm right, then I say full speed Obsidian, give us more Legion you clever clever men and women!

I thought Tyranny's Design leader was somebody relatively new to Obsidian, like somebody who's never worked on a Fallout game before.

Even if the design leader is newer than the rest, most of Obsidian's employees come from Black Isle Studios and Interplay. The rest come from Troika and a few other failed companies. Obsidian's basically a mismatch of all the different fantastic but sadly bankrupted companies over the years. I feel like they'd probably push for more Legion stuff seeing as they didn't get to do nearly as much as they wanted in NV. A lot of these guys worked on NV and the older Fallout games, including Van Buren.

Not everything Obsidian does is relevant to current events with Bethesda. They probably took some of the concepts for the characters in the game from the Legion, but I doubt they tried to "get around" Bethesda.

I never really got the idea that anyone at Obsidian were the type to hold grudges or pursue rivalries, they just make good games and I just assumed they enjoy making them. Then again, I don't know any of them personally, so they might actually talk about Bethesda the same way NMA does, but personally I kind of doubt it.

But the suggestion that they may have started the Tyranny concept based loosely on a Legion victory could be possible. Most designers use parts of previous works as concepts for their current project. It wouldn't surprise me.

I'm kind of doubtful - but I wouldn't be at all surprised if the art direction from FNV were influencing this project as well. It's not uncommon in projects which share similar themes.

Reusing art assets during the early development of a game is not uncommon. Anything too similar tends to get expunged before release though, especially when the developer doesn't have the rights to the original game.

There's also other reasons for similarities, such as using the same designers or simply putting it in as an easter egg for fans to recognize.

It could also be that a world in which evil is real and is in charge would likely be administered in much the same way as the Legion went about their business.

I mean, every brain cycle that went in to figuring out "how does the Legion assimilate tribes, indoctrinate children, keep order, etc." is probably useful for this too.

*sigh* Don't remind me about this.

I'm still pissed. Maybe wrongly so, but pissed I am and pissed I will stay.

As to answering the OP's question... no. This isn't related to NV. Maybe they took some content from the Legion, but I have a feeling this isn't about Bethesda or Fallout. If Obsidian wanted to do more stuff with the Legion, they'd, oh I don't know, do more stuff with the Legion. They'd just ask Bethesda. Besides, the design leader is supposed to be somebody new if memory serves.

So? Just because they're new doesn't mean they have no idea of anything from the past games their company made.

I'm pretty sure Obsidian's reason for doing this and not more Fallout is "if we make something ourselves, we own the IP and most of the profits are ours to pay our employees, expand the company, etc."

Why it's this specific thing and not some other new thing is probably because this is the thing they were interested in making .

And it's a thing I'm very interested in playing.
