Just got done finishing Fallout 2. My take.

So, some asshole knows where my father is and wants 100 caps for the info...My choices are

-I don't have 100
-Here's the 100
-I'll find him myself.

No chance for intimidating, lying, charming...Yeah, awesome dialogue.

Awesome graphics? Psh, graphics were pretty much going to be the only redeemable quality in this abortion of a game, and they're still mediocre. Sure, Oblivion had "the best graphics ever" in 2006, but it's 2008 and the graphics aren't improved.

People used to and still love hex gameplay. It is only less popular now due to all of the bloodthirsty, fickle idiots that control the gaming market (and industry).

Radiation levels...every single food item gives you 2 rads. Period. No difference from item to item, no clean items. Eh, just something that had a simplicity that really annoyed me. Ok, done.

My worse issue with radiation in FO3 is that the geiger counter is already built-in into the pip=boy, and you always exactly know what rads you're gaining. The anti-rad meds are available right away too. i thought those were supposed to be rare.

Thanks for spoiling F3 for me jackass. Not only wasn't there a spoiler tag, but the subject tag was in regards to F2. Fucker!

There's a spoiler warning at the top of the first post, you should expect there might be spoilers when reading this forum, and I doubt it'll ruin the game for you anyway.

.. the inference being that there's not much to ruin?

Dialogue in this game has already been attributed to the writing ability of monkeys on a typewriter, 12 year olds, and a number of less generous examples I wish I could remember.

I did like that me refusing to pay 100 caps the first time bumped up his price to 300 the second time. It really reminded me of Bishop. However, a quicksave at every building entrance means that any loss is immidiately rectified. Also, that was the only time I was reminded of the originals from the dialogue.

I'm running it on the highest settings pal, and almost all contemporary games look significantly better. See Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed, for instance.

Funny you should say that Sander; I was playing Assassin's Creed quite a bit this week, and after playing Fallout 3 for the first time today, that's the first game I thought of that was markedly superior in numerous ways. FO3 looks mediocre at best (with the possible exception of the critters / monsters). I'm not going to get into how poor the dialogue and 'choices' are.

Interestingly, if anyone has had the misfortune to play POS, try pulling the camera back to 'near isometric' and running and gunning along the highway sections in a riot helmet. It looks strikingly similar to the visuals in that appalling game.

I can understand why people might like Fallout 3, and I for one quickly got tired of the antipathy and started to approach it with an open mind, but Jesus if they haven't fucked it up bad.

Needless to say, I reinstalled Fallout, Baldur's Gate and PS: Torment and treated myself to some ROLEPLAYING.

HAHA, I pulled out those same games today, plus the Gothics and Arcanum. I decided since modern gaming sucks, I have been given the gift of time for replaying and finishing all of those games I loved so much.

Other dialogue in Fallout 3? How about the quest where you have to decide if you want to sacrifice your life or the girl's for the purity project? What about when you decide if you want to sell the kid's town off to slavery? Or when you return to Vault 101 and watch the daughter of the Overseer kill her father if you let him live?

I don't know dude - i've had some time finally with the game and everything seems forced .. like they wanted to write grit and cruelty first and then started work on the quests - the clearest indication is the writing / dialogue text - its attrocious and makes quests uninteresting.

plus everything clashes with how orderly everything is and how well behaved and obvious characters are ...

Nothing is rare in this game, beside bobby pins.
Real lock picking tools don't exist in the game and they couldn't throw in there an unbreakable pin cause then the whole stupid lock pick mini game was ruined.

Man this game is bad on so many aspects.

-Absolutely no immersion due to horrible graphics. It's dated.
Yes, that's what makes immersion- good graphics. And that's why movies are more immersive than books. I have the feeling that reading the rest of your post would be waste of time.

I would have to agree with you here, Black. Someone who thinks movies are more immersive that books, obviously lacks the knowledge to feel immersed. I have never watched a movie that drew me in as much as my favorite authors could.

Go read the Song of Ice and Fire series, by George RR Martin. Never have I been more engrossed in a book series.

If it bothers you so much disable it? Oh right, you can't whine if you do that.

My point is, you're a jackass. You haven't had nearly enough time to explore all the options. If you think you have, you must have no life and you're a nerd so it's either option A or B take your pick :)

I may be a nerd and a jackass but you're smelly and have a huge nose. So nyeh nyeh.

If you feel honest criticism of a game that's being heralded as the new gaming mesiah is 'whining', then I won't bother continuing the discussion with you.

However. Since you brought up examples within Fallout 3 you seem compelled to compare to Fallout, let me clarify my view on the dialogue. It's immature and really isn't that convincing, I mean If I wanted to read an R.L. Stine Goosebumps novel I would. And when it's delivered by z-grade voice-over 'artists' that sound more hackneyed than Pre-schoolers in a production of Helen Keller it comes off as a less than satisfying experience.

Really what you talked about were ideas for quests and plot progression, and those idea's are fine and probably rather good, but their delivery is awful and I defy anyone to prove me otherwise.

Good graphics don't make immersion on their own, but poor graphics can break the immersion that other elements build up. Some moments in Fallout 3 have made me groan... very, very loudly.
