Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
How the hell do you play this game? I'm on the second mission and I'm ready to give up.

It's always bothered me that I haven't played Tactics but I'm becoming more convinced that it just isn't worth it.

The AI is extremely dumb, there is no environment to take advantage of as such, and every single fight is the same. There aren't really any tactics involved, it's just a tedious chore, and I'm saying this as someone who's always loved the classic fallout combat.

Every fight: I try to sneak into some sort of a position, still believing that it will make a difference, I get noticed too soon and we begin yet another exchange of pew pews until someone drops. Rinse and repeat a million times.

Add to that the fact that there aren't any characters of note. There is no role playing. Just mission after mission of same-y map wipes.

Am I right about this or should I keep playing? Help me make a decision here.

There is no real RP that is for sure. But if you are playing real time and having a hard time change to turn based liked the old games. I tend to put my guys up ready for action and lure the enemy to my guys if needed but there are several ways to play the game.

In some ways, Fallout Tactics is more close to Wasteland 1 than classic Fallout.
Sure speech become driving now, but you still have some form of choices and consequences, although mostly based on if you can achieved something during a mission or not, the way you express yourself in this game will be only actions instead have both actions and words like in classic Fallout.
The combat system is not ideal, yes, but it still more advanced than the one in classic Fallout since it pretty much is the improved version of it.
And the AI is not as dumb as you believed, most of they understand to take cover behind things like sandbags or wall, won't shoot at you until reach effective range, it may not be the most intelligent AI back to the days, but it still far from dumb.
I personally think it's better to give this game a little more time, if you still don't like it, just quit, it's understandable if you found yourself still unable to like it even a little bit.
