Krater - Your thoughts about the game

It Wandered In From the Wastes
Hi! So I got Krater (steam with no DLC yet). I was desparate after a few Fallout : Tactics runs and wanted something new. There's a saying, "If you want a game like Fallout, play Fallout..". Krater was nothing I expected. The graphics are very good. As I drove into the story deeper, I realized the character progression was done pretty shallow and all I had to do was to get more recruits and not worry about dead ones on the way. It felt cheap as I would do everything to keep my characters alive in a RPG game. Despite the title, it is just a bad hack & slasher with bad design choices. I really want to like this old game and I really see the potential the engine has but since there's no real customer support and all, I got fed up after a few hours. An amazing potential wasted.. I just hope they'd put that engine to good use in the future. I could close my eyes and imagine a Fallout/Tactics remake/varient/spin-off using that engine. Without the limitations ofcourse. What's your take on the game in a nutshell?

Never heard of it.

But if you want something like Tactics, I'd try Silent Storm, Silent Storm Sentinels, and/or Jagged Alliance 2.

I quite liked it but agree that the game tends towards the shallow and repetitive. I did make sure to keep my starting fellers alive, no real point but I grew attached to the starting regulator, a H.R Geigercounter, so much that my krew were two human regulators and one mutant regulator, the others being called Teslastein and Johnny Teslomic. :V
As has been said the graphics and feel of the game are very nice, good crafting system and a worldmap is always nice but it forgets to keep the story engaging so you just end up faffing about.
Then again my liking of the game might just be down to being able to make up silly names.

Oh the names. Some times I'd just soom down and listen to my medicus sing that song which ends with something like "away, away, away..." or was it my regulater? The first NPC in the first dungeon was done very good. I was hoping every other NPC would be kewl like him but alas, it sucked as it went deep. Eventhough there is level scaling implimented, I had my whole team wiped out (the good docter Cerebro) by those regenarative regulaters. Stun them, slow them, bleed them, hit them for 200% weapon damage and they just refuse to die until your team is dead. I was into 15% of the game one and got myself wiped out 2-3 times. It is good to know that the crater (wasteland) isn't forgiving but encountering something you just can't kill @ lvl 5 is too much. Did some reading and found no one is planning to use bitsquid engine to make SP games. Magika:wizard wars and viking wars are MP. I'd love a fallout tactics remake on bitsquid considering the amount of detail included in the engine. You just fall in love with the graphics and after 5 minutes of living together, you're thinking of murder.. "Puny Fatshark"

Didn't find anything that hard until my first ... Moose? encounter, Been a while.
Two regulators can pretty much perma slow everything but does mean it takes a while to kite things to death.
Also the soundtrack, so good.
I heard that it gets better again in the later stages so might try again to get past the middle section.

Haha! I should have see that coming. I was merely refering to the point of the level scaling used in the game. Usually, as a sign of dumbing down a game, level scaling would make sure you won't get wiped out by level 40 enemies when you are at level 5 or 6. That doesn't mean you wouldn't encounter tough to kill enemies but some enemies (enemy regulaters and crazy mine workers) are impossible to kill. Each time you bring them to 20% health they regenarate in half a sec. Even if you stun or slow them, bleed'em or hit'em for 200% weapon damage, they don't die. You have to try to kill the regulaters within 3-4 seconds or the crazy miner would hack your team to death. You can target the crazy miner but then he would also regenarate instantly. You should see it for yourself mate.. I guess the moose encounter is way too difficult than this.
To the topic, the best thing in the game I found is the graphics detail. With a fixed camera setting (TQ) the game would be awesome. There are some demos showing the engines capabilities. Check'em out sometime..
