Lack of Money in the Fallout Universe.

Jabbapop

Still Mildly Glowing
One thing I've noticed in my quests through the wasteland is that although I seem to accumulate lots of goodies and marketable items from the corpses of my enemies, there seems to be a lack of money in the hands of the merchancts who I'd like to trade with. It's kind of stinky. I've noticed in FOT they give the BOS homeplace unlimited money to exchange your crap with. Does it seem too sucky that there seems to be a shortage of caps and chips in our beloved fallout rpg games?

Why not just trade your current crap for better crap? I think thats why that is.

certain services require money, though. like getting the power armor upgrade at the hubologists. :-\

It's a post apoc world...

You would need to barter for what you want.need.

I'm pretty sure tha the lack of caps/money that the merchants had was because of the fact that there wasnt much that people wanted/needed.

Eithe way... i finished all the games on PC without any problems.

euh, it's not as if there aint enough money around imho

just be patient (and if you want to unload stuff quickly also trade for things that have 0 weight, drugs?)

pretty normal that you cant unload the stuff you scrounged from an entire raidercamp onto one shopkeeper

(btw: trade for books too, easy way of getting stats up)

Funny. I NEVER had any problems with getting my hands on enough money in both Fallouts, especially in FO2.

If you are really desperate: shoot shopkeepers or kill an entire town.

I always end up with 999999 or whatever with no problem. The reason for that is the San Fran merchants have everything you need. There is little money in the wasteland because society has not developed far enough and road warriors have executed all the lawyers and bankers they have encountered.

in fallout i always have enough money, pluss a litle extra after the operations in BOS...in fallout2, theres to much money imo

just get a steal skill over 40, buy lotsa stuff in san fran, steal back your money, easy....and they always get more money to

Ah, but the merchant/quartermaster in FOT cheats - he has a counterfeit bill printing machine hidden in his desk.

Seriously, it is NOT hard to accumulate large amounts of cash. Getting the $20k is pretty simple, especially if you have the car - drop off Marcus somewhere, then do a circle of Vault City/NCR/San Fran/Redding and hit every merchant to sell whatever junk you're loaded down with. (Most merchants other places don't have enough cash to make it worth visiting. YMMV.)

First, as others have pointed out, it's a post-apocalyptic setting. Money requires something, backing. So, stamped caps were issued with backing of water as the unit of trade. The only way they could feasably issue out enough money is if there's some backing for it. There would also have to be a system of trust, for other merchants to take such money, as it could lose its worth. A GUN has more inherent worth than a few pieces of metal that say that they are worth some water. Water might become worthless again, as would the currency if the backers ever stopped being able to back them.

That is a difference between having money and capital. Therefore, the merchants would want to have something that other communities, outside of the trading circle, would want to trade with them for.

Basic economy classes here, folks.

That's why you should use that nice collection of guns to barter with unless they want money specifically. It gets you in habit for games with multiple currency systems, including Ultima 7: Serpent Isle.

Well, never had any problems making money. Selling ten leather armors and some pistols from those dead raiders and voila you should have enough cash. But even if there were less money in the Fallout enviroment that would be a GOOD thing imho.
Think about other games were you get immense riches within a few hours of gameplay usually always taking the same path; you start with hardly anything, sell some stuff do that a few hundred times and have nothing left to worry about. The problem is money becomes worthless in the process which sucks somewhat, especially in online games.
SWG tried for a player based economy to tackle this, but from what I've heard even there inflation is high and money close to worthless and that goes for every game out there. Shame.

Guns are too heavy - drugs and stimpacks are much better (the expensive ones of course).

Oh...I remember that part - I hate it!When a friend of mine came to see FO2 I was in Shady Sands(NCR) and he saved the game and started to steal...and to load...and to steal...and to load...And after 20 minutes he finaly got the Bozar :? This is one of the things I dont like about Fallout - no matter how much steal you have you can almost always get the item you want.

And now about the topic. :) You said it - its a wasteland...Bartering is just much more cooler :)

what?

with the lowest steal & sneak possible you cant possibly have to load more than 5 times (unless you've got LK 1 maybe)

just activate sneak when you are behind the guard steal it ffs

*wink-wink* Midnight booze.

Then again I don't know if the darkness penalty on PER affects the value used by steal/plant check, but it seems plausible.

Well I had Luck - 3 (dont know way but always do :) ) and Steal - 30-40 %.And I didnt sneak.And it took 20 minutes.
Maybe it took me longer becouse the deathclaw(whats-his-name) from Vault - 13 had to took off his robe(when the steal failed) and to put it back on(when they killed me) :)

Yeah, but still 20 minutes? That is a long time!
I use to get the stuff I steal after 5 min. or less!

BTW: His name is Goris!
