Well, there are a few alternatives. Rechargeable fuel cells sound like a good idea. Fuel cells that you can recharge with ethanol while you are using them. Cost was the main drawback of that system. If you could harness the heat that's wasted in the system's operation and some how convert that heat into electricity (maybe by using the heat to catalyze some chemical reaction) you could probably end up with good solution. Reducing resistance would really help too, so research in ambient-temperature superconductors will probably yield interesting results.
Remember that innovation costs money and many companies (Dell is a good example) hate to risk money innovating. They prefer to let Apple and other companies to try it first. They made me laugh a lot when I was taking the training for the new XPS 710 with H2C. Seriously these guys were sounding off as if Dell had invented thermo-electric cooling (look up Peltier in wikipedia). This is a techology that's pretty old and those guys now think they have reinvented the wheel. That's one area that could use some improvement.
