latency with usb 1.1 soundcards

yeah, obscure, i know. but has anyone noticed latencies with external usb-soundcards (2.0 or, better, 1.1)? i dont even know how to measure this, the only way i know my latency is by looking into ableton live...

question is whether to buy a firewire or usb external device.

Why not get a $10 PCI soundcard?
 
interim solution before some real audio card becomes available with dsp processing. right now, i produce with an onboard sound"card" on my home computer, and the inherent latency of 300+ msec make realtime playing and controlling a bitch. anyway, i bought some cheap-ass usb-card (some audigy thing with quite a lot of jacks). even if it has 25 msec+ latency, it would still beat the shit out of my emulated "sound""card"
