Little help

EnclaveKnight

It Wandered In From the Wastes
Yeah I know, another character thread. but here is the thing, I need help with something important, history/archetype.

I currently have former Brotherhood of Steel character, but Think I can do better with a former NCR Ranger character. The premise is the same for both in terms of backstory: They grew up in the Lost Hills bunker/NCR capital, then (If NCR) joined the rangers. As Brotherhood of Steel, she killed her father over a woman. As NCR she left before any time in the NCR because she got angry with her commanding officer about tactics. I am planning on restarting my character anyways, just need to know if I should change the character or not. So, which one should I do, stick with BoS, or go NCR?

Will be hardcore all times.

Quick answer, and short. No need to explain, unless you want. But I agree, I love the idea of a character who killed her dad for love.

For those still deciding, the BoS having sneak and survival, it is because she is a renegade of the Brotherhood. for NCR, that is simply training.

NCR SPECIAL: S-6, P-6, E-7, C-3, I-4, A-8, L-9/10
BoS SPECIAL: S-8, P-6, E-8, C-3, I-4, A-7, L-9/10

Hmm.. I think that S-8 is a bit too much. Maybe 7 or 6. C-3 and I-4 are also rather low. P-7 should be better than P-6. I know that she was lucky to escape from killing her father, but.. I think L-8 is better.

However, there's something.. You'll be villified with the BoS, and I kinda feel sorry when I wipe them out/blow them up. And this made me go as far as install the House -- BoS truce mod.

S-8 is for Old Worlds blue, just because I am tacking on the reinforced spine. P-7 might be cool, but I think 6 is enough, as all it is there for is perks, and there is no perks that require 7 perception. I tend to keep Charisma and Intelligence low on purpose, as I can't see a reason for it to be higher, unless there is a mod that reduces skill points gained on levels, and Charisma as mostly pointless as I will end up without companions mostly. L-8 is the start, 9/10 is for the ending.

The SPECIAL are set up for the ending of the game.

Ah, alright. Any ending you're planning to go for?

And I don't pick INT to be under 4 because well.. the dialogue turns from normal to dumb.

None that I currently plan, might end up with House, because she can see how tech can help people's lives.

I will probably stick with Brotherhood of Steel, as it makes sense if you think about it.

I decided to stick with the BoS runaway. Altered her strength down to 5 and put perception at 6. will have 7 strength at the end for some heavy energy weapons at Hoover Dam.

Keep debating between Medicine and Survival for healing. On hardcore. Can use skill books to boost survival and tag Medicine for in combat and better history (she would have learned some medical skills because her mother was the Lost Hills doctor).

I am set on a Brotherhood build, unless someone has a reason for NCR, or maybe something else entirely.

In other words, keep posting ideas, and I will read them.

Note that unless you have a mod installed, you will have to destroy the BoS if you side with House.

One idea for RP might be to pick up Veronica and make contact with the Brotherhood early on in the game - focus on completing their questline, joining the Brotherhood and getting Power Armor Training. Then complete the rest of the game, but from the perspective of an agent of the Brotherhood, i.e, hit the NCR hard whenever you can (maybe after obtaining a truce with the Brotherhood?), hoard energy weapons (and be willing to kill NPCs to obtain them if they have them and aren't Brotherhood personnel), destroy pre-war "abominations" (i.e. kill Mr. House and the Think Tank), take back HELIOS One, kill the Enclave Remnants and just generally ensure that any factions that might pose a problem for the Brotherhood are severely weakened or wiped out by the end. You could do this with either a "kill 'em all" style of gameplay, or choose to go about it more covertly, but either way never forget your allegience is to the BoS and their ideals.

Well, she will be a renegade/ex-member, what with having killed her dad over a girl, so she would not have a problem with killing them, if only out of pure paranoia.

Ah, okay, never mind then. :) House is not a bad option for a rogue/ex-BoS'er. That could also open up, potentially, a closer relationship with Veronica - your character could see her younger self in Veronica, and wants to make sure she escapes what your character no doubt regards as a dangerous cult.

I do like the "rejoin" idea. She could do so to keep them on her good side and to throw them off her trail. but then as the game goes on, she feels more and more paranoid that they know who she really is.

Or you could just have her infiltrate the Brotherhood in order to destroy them; gain their trust and then stab them in the back by blowing up Hidden Valley.

Have you given much thought to how she'll feel about Elijah? I don't know if she's intelligent or perceptive enough to get too close with Christine, or if you'd allow her to (via roleplaying) given her valid fear of Brotherhood agents hunting her down, so it's possible that she wouldn't ever come to find that he'd put Christine and Veronica in a similar situation to her and her (ex-?) lover (which I'm sure would make her hate him right off the bat). Then again, she also doesn't strike me as the sort that would take kindly at all to being collared.

With an intelligence of 4, I'm not sure she'd ever quite relate to Elijah on the finer points of what he was doing, but if she were at all sympathetic to the general slant of his rantings, it's possible that she could come to see a number of parallels between the two of them-- both willful renegades from the same house, the shackling ideals of their order forcing them to extremes from which there was no return.

Good point with Elijah. She might just treat him like her dad, bossing her around, and think he is insane.

For Christine, I may just have to break a rule and use Chems for that (I try to avoid them when possible, plus, I do not want to get Implants for the stat boosts).

You will need a Perception of at least 7 to get most of the dialogue options with Chrsitine and a Perception of 8 for one dialogue check in particular; high Medicine and Science (70+) are helpful as well.

If you are not planning on getting Implants, I would definitely shift points from Endurance to Intelligence - you will get more dialogue options and more experience points, and honestly aside from getting implants, high Endurance is only necessary if you are planning to specialize in Unarmed Combat (which maybe you are; New Vegas establishes that Brotherhood Scribes are supposed to be skilled martial artists). Also, if you're planning on Tagging Medicine I think a higher Intelligence is in order, if only for roleplaying purposes - remember that 4 is considered "Below Average" Intelligence; only one point lower and you have dumb dialogue options! I would think somebody with a background in the BoS should have at least 5 intelligence, and if they have medical training/education I would bump it up to a 6 at least.

Uh, comprehension boosts skill magazines by double the normal amount (and requires only 4 intelligence), plus there is intense training to boost specials alone.

And quite honestly the skills will end up like this

level 50:
Combat skills-100
Tech skills-max out around 70.

Okay, but my suggestion to boost Intelligence had nothing to do with skill levels, and a lot to do with roleplaying, dialogue options and SPECIAL stat checks (not the same as skill checks!).

If you want to use Intense Training to up your Intelligence you can, of course, but with a starting INT of 4 you'd need to boost it by at least 2 before you'd start seeing extra dialogue options, and probably by 3 if you wanted special dialogue with Christine and other characters in Dead Money and Old World Blues. Three ranks of Intense Training for a single stat seems like a waste of perks to me, but it's up to you of course.

If you're really averse to raising INT above 4, you could just take Mentats to temporarily raise your SPECIAL, but you also said you try to avoid chems in gameplay (not sure why you'd avoid chems but be okay with magazines, unless it's for roleplaying purposes), so I would think that's all the more reason to up your INT.
