Live Greatness

Mildly Dipped
Well people, I've been wondering, what's the best concert you've ever been to?

For me it has to be Motörhead + Sepultura here in Stockholm some time ago.

Sepultura were true to their reputation, even without Max Cavalera they put up a good show, nice intro to what was to come. However they weren't the main reason for me being there.

After a rather long wait, the three make their way onto the stage. "We are Motörhead. We play Rock 'n' Roll." They blew me away, quite simply. After having played 30-some years Lemmy still has it. During the entire gig the feeling in the pit was incredible, culminating as they played their all-time classic Ace Of Spades. Great show, great memories.

Now all of you, what are your best concert memories?

My best concert memory was when I was 18 and attending Edgefest in Somerset WI, where No doubt, Gravity Kills and other acts were scheduled to play for a two day festival(this was like 8 years ago mind you). I decided that I was cool and wanted to drink half a bottle of tequila before the show. Somehow they let me in the gates, already blacked out, and proceeded to get too heavy for my other inebriated friends to carry. I was dropped along a fence so they could find our other friends (no one had a cell phone- these were the dark ages remember) and I (apparently) began puking and dry heaving. The paramedics found me and I spent the entire first day passed out in the medic tent. Eventually I came to, thanked the EMTs (who were quite amused at me, rightly so) and stumbled back into the outdoor concert.

Already dazed and confused (and still dehydrated even after a liter of water) I stumbled about achieving a contact high along with way until I coincidentally stumbled within eyeshot of my friends, who grabbed me and we left.

The next day was much more enjoyable, although I never did get to see Gravity Kills, who performed during my blackout the previous day. Oh well.

The best performance I've seen was The Red Hot Chili Peppers from the floor a few years ago. That was kick-ass.

Yundi Li's piano recital at the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater during September 20th, 2003.

The first half of his concert was devoted to Chopin's four scherzos, and the second half to Liszt's Sonata in B Minor.

Yundi Li played the best rendition of Chopin I've ever heard, being there in person, it was simply stunning. It is no wonder he won first prize in the Warsaw Chopin Competition (first time someone had won that prize in 15 years, they don't have to award it if no competitor is qualified).

Three choices, I suppose

One is seeing the Rolling Stones. I mean they're a bunch of walking skeletons, but I've been a Stones-fan since I was a little wee toddler, and finally seeing them live was something special. And expensive.

It was their 40 Licks tour about a year ago, just me and my dad going there. It was rock out, they played a good show.

Let's see. I remember when the Rotterdam Philharmonic did a performance of Mahler's 1st "Der Titan". I'm not a big Mahler-fan, but that performance was special. All of the Philharmonic was one strike and to show it they were not wearing suits, but normal everyday clothes. This may not sound shocking to some people, but in those circles it is.

The strike, however, made itself felt by the aggressivity with which they played. This was not noticeable during the first 3 movements, but the last bit...my God, best performance of Der Titan I ever heard.

Last was a simple multiple-band night at a hardcore/metal cafe of which I don't even remember the name, it was probably the Doornroosje in Nijmegen, though. It was a hard night, though, a lot of fun, highlighted by the point where my brother accidentally kicked the cap off some dude's head as that dude was standing at the edge of the mosh pit. Hilarity ensued.

Iron Maiden in New Jersey in... 2002 I think. They do a great kickass stage show. Add to that that I went with a lot of friends, and it was a great time.

Slayer with Killswitch Engage and Mastodon, a few months back.

Nothing like seeing the greatest thrash metal band in the world in a small venue. Simply amazing. Nothing flashy, just sheer brutality. I held onto the fucking crowd barrier for dear life.

U2 on their 'Elevation' tour in the sportpalace in Antwerp, two years ago. Goddamn that was a good concert.

Close seconds: Red Hot Chili Peppers at Rock Werchter, two years ago; The Dropkick Murphy's about a year ago somewhere; and Tom Mcrae, last year at Rock Werchter.

So there.

BB King, third row seats. Great musician, great performance and a great view of it all. Plus that drunk chick who bought me and my two friends some beers was pretty nice too. I wonder if she knew we were still in high school?

I saw B.B. King two weeks ago. It was great, but I wasn't as close as I was at the Peppers. Close second though.

Black Sabbath with Ozzy, at Roskilde ´98. Once in a lifetime.

Also, I've been at 2 Metallica concerts (´99 and ´02 I think) and they were both excellent. Even though Metallica now produce crap albums, they still play 2-3 hour concerts with all the classics.

Przystanek Woodstock.

400 000 people, cheap beer. Sex, drugs, rock & roll.

Agreed. I can't stand anything they did after ...And Justice For All, but they still rule live. Especially now that they pretty much stick to the first four albums.

Well, I don't have an all time favorite but a few gigs spring to mind.

Last summer at Doer festival I saw Brant Bjork and bros, wich was simply amazing.

And the few times I went to Rock Werchter I saw Tool and PJ Harvey in one weekend. Sweet.

Last years Populario (http://www.populario.de) indie rock festival. Best acts: "Superpunk" (http://www.superpunk.de) and "Olli Schulz und sein Hund Marie". Really cheap (20€ for 2 days) great girls, camping atmosphere, and a lot of beer :)

But I hope that my best concert will be in March, because Tocotronic are touring with their new album ATM and March, 31 they're coming to Dresden :)
