Besides, it sounds like what you're asking for isn't so much a mod as it is new cutscenes entirely. James' sacrifice is also one of the few GOOD moments in the game; he was a dead man no matter what he did, so at least he stalled for time, took a few Enclave with him, and managed to let your character escape.

It's very much a "Your Mileage May Vary" type of thing there. I haven't uncovered anything that dramatically changes that section of the game, but I have come across this one that altered James' fate.

Dad Lived! is more or less a companion mod that turns James into a companion after the Purifier incident. He lived and was treated by the magical macguffin serum by Autumn in order to try to get the code again. Rescue Dad from Raven Rock, have him as a companion.

James' presence in the last leg of the main quest is negligible, though I'm sure he'd go into the Purifier if it were an option. But that's why he has you.

A mod like this is a personal call.

Yeah it's a bitch to get working though. Still...pretty awesome. I'm considering installing Fallout 3 just for it, just to go into the Capitol Wasteland and kill every last living thing I can find, especially Three Dog and Moira. Boone and ED-E will enjoy that. :)
