M-16? Now canon?

First time out of the vault
In Tactics, the M-16 was deemed inconsistent with the retro-futuristic theme along with the fossil fuel powered vehicles in a timeline where nearly all sources of oil in the world were depleted... considering the world took an alternate route following the 50s in the Fallout series. I'm curious, with modern weapons showing up in New Vegas, is this going to give Tactics some validity?

I think they should have gone with a version of the original armalite AR-10

M4 is a M16 variant last I checked (6 years in the Marine Corps), shorter and lighter but still a M16. Got the same response in the official forums as well...

Regardless of what you want to call it... A2, A4... it does not really change my statement/question at all.

I was thinking the same thing my self. I wouild actually go farther and say the Ak47 in Tactics is also now cannon due to chinese ak thingie in 3.

That chinese AK "thingy" was a bit odd. it looked like it had a RPD handguard, Type-56s-2 side folding stock (one of two types made for US commercial market), AK magazine, and the receiver and barrel assembly are a bit odd as well. I think they just missmatched parts in photoshop and then rendered them.

Hence why I was informal about the name, I'm not a gun person myself but I can see your point. Bethesda proabaly just threw parts of different varents together. From an in universe perspsive (if you want to inculd 3 as cannon that is) the ak-47 was invented in, well, 1947 in the fallout timeline, and the "chinese assault rifle" is just another (fictonal)variant.

The design actually goes back to AR-15, which was made in 1958, so it's not that inconsistent with the divergence.

I wasn't trying to be dicky, I just wonder what they were up to when they made it... If they were going to use "chinese" weapons, why not also add the Type 68 rifle (full auto hybrid SKS that takes detachable magazines),

As for pistols i would have thought that they could have come up with something better than the chinese broomhandle mauser copies. Maybe bethesda was trying to make a reference to the broomhandles or maybe it was the type 80 (modern gun from the 1970s) they were using as a model.

If they were going to add broomhandles, why not do it in .45 since those seem to have been very popular in china (not 10mm models) or heres an idea, why not use a unique chinese pistol:

I guess I would have prefered that they made the guns up entirely rather than stick broom handle mausers in... oh well.

Actually it seems the screens for this game may be fake. The screen shots look sloppy and it really seems like a mod or an add on created by a fan just for looks. Besides it's not like the screen shots are on the official site. I remember when Bethesda posted real screen shots everywhere on their site before the game was released. So it may be that this gun will not be in the game.

AK and FN FAL respectively entered production in 1949 and 1950, that's fine by me, but the M16ish rifles are much more 60's modern weapons, and I hate those in FO. Even if it's from the 80's, the Desert Eagle, only by its name, is fitting, but a rifle iconic of the Viet Nam era is really out of place for me.

I also wonder why DC would be filed with Chinese Assault Rifles...

The AK that most people are familiar with wasn't designed till 56, only a year before the M-16, the AK-47 name just stuck to it.

Ans the M-16 is hardly only a Vietnam era weapon, its still the mainstay of US forces. I wouldn't be terribly shocked if its still in service come 77.

I didn't like the assault rifle in Fallout 3 or in the previous games, so I wouldn't mind some kind of replacement. The M16 is a nice looking gun and it nearly fits the timeline so I wouldn't get too upset. I'd probably prefer a slightly different gun that is evocative of the M16 though.

cannon: an insight into hand-cannons

As I see it, cannon within fallout would refer to anything which matches the setting and time-line;

as such:

Fact A: setting Mainland USA
-- A commonly built and owned weapon, the M16 and other AR varient rifles (a lot of gun owners in USA have AR rifles, the ex army stock probably has millions of units all in various states of repair)

Fact B: cannon time-line (link)
-- states the bombs fell in 2077, and only begins to diverge from our REAL history around 1992. As such ANY weapon that is considered modern (refer to World Guns ) would NOT be out of place (indeed with room for some 'near-future' variants to be dreamed up and included).

I see no reason why Fallout cannon would not include AR rifles, even SCAR rifles or AK and Steyr, in fact I'd think it odd if they weren't included. There are probably untold numbers of weapons like these in modern day USA for them to suddenly disappear would be out of place.

The Armalite AR-10 has .308 caliber.

Maybe it is an AR-18 in the game, with wood furniture.
