Mad Max 4 Will be an Animated Movie

Morbus

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
As you may recall, a movie called "Mad Max 4" was in its pre-production stage of development, but it eventually got canned for financial reasons. Now, George Miller, the Writer and Director of all of the series' films says this:
I see myself as someone who is very curious about storytelling and all its various media. I’ve always loved anime, in particular the Japanese sensibility. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do.
Indeed, he said he wanted to go a "different route", and instead of working with dear ol' Mel Gibson, he's going to go the voice acting plus CGI route. MTV Movies Blog brings us his words, and the news that the next Mad Max movie will be an "R-rated, stereoscopic anime flick" that's supposed to "adapt [the Japanese-style animation] for Western audiences". He talks about games too, as he, along with God of War II Designer Cory Barlog, is developing an action game (is there any other kind of game? I forget...) based on its new work on the series.
The anime is an opportunity for me to shift a little bit about what anime is doing because anime is ripe for an adjustment or sea change. It’s coming in games and I believe it’s the same in anime. There’s going to be a hybrid anime where it shifts more towards Western sensibilities. [Japanese filmmaker Akira] Kurosawa was able to bridge that gap between the Japanese sensibilities and the West and make those definitive films.
Well, these are some news for the fans of all the stuff involved, be it anime, Mad Max or action games, what I'm wondering right now is whether it is good news.

Thanks Ausir once again.

So, a Western version of Hokuto no Ken, or what? Quite bizarre.

I'm reminded of Yoshiaki Kawajiri's Highlander. Was pretty weak as a whole, but visually it's still quite nice, so this might not be that bad after all.

What did you expect from a guy who directed that stupid Happy Feet cartoon?

C'mon...dancing penguins?

Do'h! It would've been nice to have another live action Mad Max.

Strange it didn't get financing, given the remake-sequel-prequel-reimagining craze that's been going on in Hollywood for some time.

Oh come on, really, screw this movie, for reals.

"A few days ago I saw a rig that could haul that tanker, you want to get outta here, talk to me" (more or less what he says) just wouldn't hold the same weight with cartoon Max waving his empty double barrel at the Gyro captain. I am skeptical to say the least

As long as it maintains an R rating, and stays true to what The Road Warrior established, how could it not be cool? If the animation is done like in A Scanner Darkly it could be very cool.

It's not like they shoveled off the development to a bunch of frat guys that don't even appreciate the source material. :D

It could be good if it's well done.

A good example of a Post-Apoc anim: Here

Sad to say, but we simply need more post-apoc stuff about, films and such.

Agree. It's an interesting setting but not well explored.

To be fair, he also directed the original three Mad Max films. :P

But yeah, I'm skeptical.

Western sensibilities? What does that even mean.

Why watch or read about it when you can experience it first-hand? The next four years will be a fear-filled roller coaster ride.

Probably more like a Wester version of Appleseed, minus the mecha.

Couldn't be all that bad if they do the VA properly, but it's really unclear why it's being called "anime" if it is 3D - are they indeed planning to go to the lengths to stylize it, or just mis-phrasing it? It'd probably be more apropriate as a "western-style" CGI.

In any case, and animated Mad Max is probably not as horrible as the Hollywood version of Dragonball (which unfortunately exists).

Yeah it would be awesome but it won't be. A Scanner Darkly (and Waking Life for that matter) were filmed first and then came the animation. That's what makes these movies so unique. It's called "Rotoscope technique". It's pretty obvious Mad Max 4 isn't going to be done like that. If they were to film it first, animation shit probably wouldn't be happening at all.

One might think that a Mad Max sequel would be as near a money magnet as ... BofA or Merrill Lynch.

Well maybe not that black a gravitational sink hole ... as sure an investment or speculation, either methodology now just forms of gambling these days ...

As sure a bet as GM, well when GM was 'once upon a time' the moral and fiscal equivalent of what was 'good for the country'.

Well who ever has money to leverage ...

Would be interesting why the lack of monied interests in MM4, that was back during the "age of the new paradigm" when the planet was boldly awash with other peoples money, hot to be hosed into mighty pyramids to eternity (caution: your time/space watermarks may vary).

Always suspicious of "new agers" (air heads or con *persons*) and it's cold comfort to see in this installment of human hubris,
this episode of 'smart money kills the golden goose' that George Miller has found another way to get his tale told.

Maybe going this route he has more control of his IP, and the over all production.

Maybe the millions not spend on 'face talent' like Gibson, Miller can blow on computer actuated adventure.
Maybe real story tellers will infiltrate the bastion of mediocrity that is the computer entertainment industrial complex.
Maybe fewer endangered species, like the high powered V8's will die in spectacularly choreographed car crashes ... all chrome crunching will be virtual.

Still would be interested in knowing what stopped MM4 back then, what exact year was that? 2004 ... 2005 ... 2006 ... ?
Maybe the penguin movie (2006) showed Dr. Miller a new way to dance.

Ah someone who just woke up from an 8 year slumber...
