Mapper and Steam Fallout 2 -- any way to make them work?

It Wandered In From the Wastes
Basically I wanna make Fallout sprite comic fan fiction, using the mapper to create backgrounds. Thing is, I have only the Steam version of Fallout 2 (which lately seems to come with an official version of the high-res patches, same as the other classic Fallout games). Is there any way to get this baby to work with the mapper, or should I try and get a FOnline mapper going instead? (Would also need a tutorial for that if that's the case)

Thanks in advance, guys. <3

I've never used Steam, but according to my understanding the basic problem is "synchronization," namely-- you make some changes, and then the service "helps" or "protects" you by reverting or undoing all your changes. For your particular purpose, though, you shouldn't have much trouble. Using the Mapper consists simply of using the files Mapper2.exe and mapper2.cfg. Make a folder called Fallout2 on the root directory of your disk. Mapper2.cfg is a text file, you'll need to edit this file so the mapper can find the directory where you have the game installed, e.g. C:\Steamgames\Fallout or whatever. You should be able to look at any maps you want after that. In the Mapper, the "print screen" function is the F12 key.

Mapper serves two functions - as a map editor and proto editor. If you disable "librarian" functions in mapper2.cfg, place mapper in separate folder and just point to master.dat/critter.dat files in the cfg, it should be pretty stand alone.

Though you should check out FOnline mapper, it may be more user-friendly for your purpose :)

Thanks for the advice; any particular version of FOnline you can suggest for me? I assume they all have different mappers.

I got the Fallout 2 mapper working but for some strange reason when I try to place tiles, they don't show up. :-/

EDIT: Never mind, I found a standalone FOnline 2238 mapper. :) I've got it working so far!
