Martial arts

So, does anyone train some kind of martial art, or boxing/wrestling? What are your thoughts on the matter? I'm asking here because most members don't really fall into the category of martial artists, so I'm just checking to see if it's mostly just a stereotype.

I've trained a few martial arts but when you see krav maga you realise that the best martial art is a kick to the nuts, a finger to the eyes and a healthy dose of elbow to the throat...

Everything else kinda seems like aerobics after that...

True, Krav maga would be the best for self defense, but how often do you actually need it, if you live in the civilized world? Also, in Europe, most people don't have guns.

I have done Tae Kwon Do, off and on, for a few years. I like it. Good aerobic workout and the sparing is a cathartic release. Useful for self-defense? Better than nothing I suppose.

I did a bit of judo, reached the second Kyu (blue belt) and then lost interest. Even though there were some hot girls in my class, who laid me on a regular basis (pun intended). I haven't practised for two years now and doubt I can stand a fight under the rules today (I got fat), but it's enough for self-defense.
Now I have a punching bag in my room.

Watched some Tae Kwon do at the club today, as they were training before us. Some of the kicks are very cool. Anything is good for self-defense, I suppose, but if that's what you're really looking for, the acrobatic and often unnecessary moves in TKD might not be the best.

As for judo, don't take getting fat as an excuse not to go. Not only will you have an obvious advantage in the beginning, but to a real judoka, weight isn't that important.

If you are looking into something strictly for low-down-and-dirty-self-defense-street-fighting I'd recommend either kick-boxing or judo.
In my experience those two aren't too flashy and they get the job done.

If you are looking for a workout I'd recommend Tae Kwon Doe.

Wtf? Judo is often called "the gentle martial art" or "the female way of fighting" 'cause it contains a lot of options to overturn someone by a pitch or foot lever without hurting him. It's a rather nonviolent form of physical confrontation.
Also, if I got involved in a fight I forget judo and kick my opponent's balls.

Yes but for self defense purposes you either want to deter somebody (by knocking them on their ass -> Judo) or beat the shit out of them (kick boxing is a pretty no-nonsense way of doing that) and if that is not enough for you you could just kill the attacker using krav maga (the aforementioned kick to the balls)...

I've become heavily involved in "Wa Shin Ryu" Jujutsu. It's a system that adds elements of Judo and Aikido to Jujutsu. It's a very good workout, and very much a style of actual fighting. We're taught how to take out, disable, maim, and kill our opponents. If anyone is interested, this is the website for my dojo... http://playlab.uconn.edu/budenkan.html

There's a whole system philosophies section. Give it a read.

I practice "O Na Nism" on a daily basis. It's a very good workout, and very much a style of actual fighting. :look:

I rely on brute force and my mutant-like resilience..

But I guess that doesn't fall into the 'martial arts' category.
