gameplay came second to the plot, which is not okay for a video game. Really.

Why is it not okay for a game to be driven by plot instead of just being a string of pointless gameplay?

The AI is't good, the controls can be a disaster... The list goes on.

I felt that everything worked well enough. I personally liked the controls, they really let you pick the game up and pretty quickly learn how to do anything you needed to. As for AI, it worked fine. They patrolled, looked for intruders, then attempted to kill intruders. Were you expecting guards who ate, slept, and went to church?

Don't twist words, it's annoying.
He said that it's not okay that a game neglects gameplay. This does not mean that a game cannot be plot-driven, but rather that here must be gameplay. That's what the medium is about: interactivity. If you can tell a good story or create a game centered around plot, that's great. But there has to be interactivity to justify the choice of the medium, and if the interactivity is subpar, that's a shame.

If the aim of the developers was purely to tell a story, they should have made a movie or written a book.
If however they wanted to make a game with a solid story, then they have to make sure the game part is good as well.

The AI was purposely built in a way that made it possible to circumvent the guards. If they'd given the guards human vision the game would have been pretty much unbeatable in the format they used.

Yes, its not uncommon to see stealth games give you the upper hand. Next time you play splinter cell, pay attention to the amount of light given off by a lamp that probably should be able to illuminate the entire room.

The simple fact is, games are meant to entertain and although MGS was not entirely realistic it was a very entertaining game.

I've beaten all of the MGS games at least twice (except the GBC one), but I've grown tired of the style. It's far too over-the-top for me, and the gameplay isn't emphasized as much as it should be.

Then why did you bother to beat all of them at least twice? I haven't even done that, and I am a fan of the games.

Well, that was before I got tired of them.
