I hate to be the irreverent one, but the man was a whore. He wrote a The Lost World as a sequel to the MOVIE Jurassic Park, reviving characters that had died in the book -- namely Ian Malcom.

Michael Crichton pretty much invented the contemporary Sci-Fi thriller - at least for the past generation. I'm not saying he was an amazingly talented writer. I enjoyed the Andromeda Strain, which showcased his medical knowledge (he was a medical doctor) and with all of its side notes is pretty much a primer on epidemiology. I also enjoyed Jurassic Park, and I still think this idea will eventually come to fruition. There is enough profit to be made from zoos and toys and TV shows that some biotech startup with the capability and venture capital behind them would be fools to pass it up. Maybe they won't be true dinosaurs - I'm not sure that there's enough dino-DNA still around in amber or bones or birds (and Crichton brought up that possibility) but looking and acting enough like dinosaurs to be convincing.
As he got away from his medical knowledge I think his work suffered with shoddier science in the Sci-Fi. I read Prey and thought it got a bit ridiculous with its science and its main character.
Perhaps Crichton's most lasting impact on culture will be his role in creating the long-running TV show E.R. which redefined the realism in doctor TV shows - and without which there probably wouldn't be a C.S.I. or a House.

I first read the Cyberiad when I was 13 and even if I missed some of its subtleties, I fucking laughed my ass off and thought it was a good book. Later on I kept coming back to it and discovering new hidden meanings. During the years I found a totally different appreciation of the man and his work, Lem's writings are some of the most cerebral and entertaining works that I got my hands on.
About Crichton: I swear, I didn't know he died. This thread was the first news I read about it. I too liked Jurassic Park and The Andromeda Strain. It is a loss, but I think a greater loss was Arthur C. Clarke's death earlier this year. But I guess when it's time to go, it's time to go.

Sad, he was a good writer, admittedly i haven't read his entire work, but i did read some of his books. And i liked the original jurassic park book. He really should have lived longer, and healthier.

Anyways, to stop threadshitting, I enjoyed Eaters of the Dead. Even though it was a shitty movie, there will always be a special place in my heart for the 13th Warrior as well.

I enjoyed him in Black Adder though. But House is hyped waaaaaaaay beyond what should be legal.
The 13th warrior was alright, it had some nice feeling to it. Even though the whole "arab coming to the north and being greeted as one of them" is a bit, well, wrong.
