might be getting me a laptop

Lenovo T400 all the way...

Get one with a LED wxga+ Display and a 9 cell battery and you are all set.
While that site claims you can get a T400 for $800, the best I can do is about €1200, and that's the WXGA version, which is comparable to a Macbook Pro 13", which I can get for less due to student discounts. Couple that with the fact that it's heavier, especially with the larger battery, and it's not worth it for me.

I own an old T42 so I do know about its awesome ruggedness, though.

Note, I won't be playing anything remotely recent on any laptop I will be getting, so performance isn't all that relevant.

Hmm, aren't there any student discounts for Thinkpads in your country?

How much warranty does the Macbook have?

Maybe you should check out the Thinkpad R400 models?

You can get a R400 with a wxga+ LED display, 9 cell battery, 3 years of warranty as a student over here in Germany for 735€...

You could also check out the HP Compaq 6530b or these refurbished notebooks http://stores.shop.ebay.co.uk/eComputers-LTD

No student discounts that I know of. The Apple discount is something that Apple is offering by itself. Probably in a bid to establish a dedicated fanbase.

The R400 doesn't seem significantly different from the T400, at least not in price. They do seem to have much cheaper models, but they are also a lot shittier (2GB memory with Vista?).

That ebay shop looks like it's just a Dell reseller, but might be worth taking a look at.

If you buy a notebook with Vista now you will get a free upgrade for Windows 7.

2gigs of Ram are enough.

Maybe you should just go and buy the Macbook its a good notebook that should suit your needs just fine.

How much would you have to pay?

Really?
I don't know much about Windows 7, but I'd be surprised if its memory demands are really that much lighter. Minimum stats do say just 1GB of RAM, but 2GB for the 64-bit version.

1,000-1,200 depending on whether I not I take the upgraded one. Pretty expensive, but nothing I can't pay.

I'll jump by one of the Mac dealers to at least try out the Macbook. They usually have a few on display. And maybe drop by Mediamarkt to see what they have on display.

how odd. I came to this forum now only for one reason: to find this thread. and there it is, bumped up to the very top. awesome

I still haven't decided on which one to get, but it really leans towards this one: http://www.inwarehouse.se/k/ki.aspx?sku=477536

I'm still having the same dilemma however - not sure if I'm going to use it mainly for gaming while not at home, or movies, surfing and music. the one I linked to might just be a bit too much for my actual needs.

what I wonder mostly is how the integrated graphics chipsets work. I know they're pretty much crap generally, but even the most powerful ones, can they play any sort of modern games whatsoever? I'm having a hard time finding information about this as it seems people are more interested in reviewing desktop video cards.

and good luck in your quest Sander, nice threadjacking there ;)

RAM is dirt-cheap anyway. If you plan on buying a new one, ESPECIALLY Lenovo, DON'T ORDER ADDITIONAL RAM FROM THEM. They're ridiculously overpriced (to illustrate - purchasing an internal DVD writer for my T61 would set me back about $200. Instead I got a USB powered external unit from LG for $80). Rather, order Kingston.

I got 4GB of 667Mhz RAM from Kingston for around $100, if memory serves me right.

I am partial to X400 also.

EDIT:

Just to avoid misleading you, I haven't checked prices for memory upgrades on Lenovo in a while so take my words "cum grano salis" :)
