Military Base-- can't make entrance!

Remus

First time out of the vault
How do you get into the military base? There's the metal cart, and I know you have to stick the metal pole in it and then stick a dynamite in the pole-- but how do you stick the dynamite to the pole? I've spent very long time trying to solve it, played many times the game without figuring it out... it's crazy! Could somebody help me?

Jeeez..thats an easy one
step 1: atach ze pole(by right-click-hold on the cart and press the backpack, you know the deal)
step 2: same prosedure, only right-click-hold on the pole instead of the cart

Actually, the worst part I've had here on my first run was finding the pole. I haven't even suspected that it could lie right by my PC's feet. I even tried to attach a Spear to the cart! LOL

Once you have the pole, it's all the way downhill from there. Just inventory-use the pole on the cart, the explosive (either Dynamite or Plastic) on the pole and push (use) the cart.

yes, there is more to it. it helps the background story.

AND you get to meet someone mentioned before in the game. the mention of him doesnt make sense if you dont meet him later on i'd say...

i'm not going into details (spoilers), but needless to say you need the US version or the childpatch for that reference.

*SPOIL*

You mean that kid in that city who's the child of that guy?

Don't forget the gauss pistol, the weapons and ammo inside and the experience for killing Melchoir and the mutants. This kid of thing are of help to the PC during the develpment of the game.

And bunnies. Pink, fluffy bunnies, they cuddle you and make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Dudes, you're forgetting one of the best things in the game - the Powered Armour!

I'm kidding.

I mean

.... - the RAT SURPRISE! :D

I'm having the same problem. I have no problems putting the Metal Pole on the Cart, because when I equip the Metal Pole I'm given a "Use On" option. As oposed to when I equip Dynamite, "Use" being the only option I'm given.

I tried to follow Kahgan's instructions, but wound up completely and utterly lost. I sat around opening and closing my backpack for about 5 minutes before realizing I wasn't making any progress.

While rummaging through my intentory via Right-Click > Backpack, the only options I'm given are "Examine", "Drop", and "Cancel". None of which I can figure a use for in this situation..

Maybe I'm just not reading the instructions correctly? Something a little more verbose, please?

Also, I'm playing on V1.00 if that means anything.

You should download the 1.02 patch... should fix your problems.

I figured that'd be the problem. From what I've read, installing a patch kills all pre-patch saved game files. Not looking to do that, so I guess we're skipping the Military Base.

Thanks.

I can't believe that being able or not being able to attach the pole is a patching issue. It would have been known.

Edit: reread your post and possibly spotted what you're doing wrong. Once you choose backpack and get the inventory, you're not supposed to right-click or click-and-hold the item to be used, just select it with a single left click.

Of course it's not a patching issue. It works with no problems in v1.0.

It's more likely an issue of being extremly lazy. "Oh my... I didn't figured it out the first times so it means it doesn't works. Stupid game!"

As enilightened as that theory may be, you couldn't be much further from the truth.

I wouldn't have asked for help had I not exhausted every possibility I've come up with. I tried dropping Dynamite, I tried using dynamite, then dropping, and dragging it on the cart. I've tried hitting the cart with a sledgehammer (like I only recently found out you could do with doors.) I tried using the rope I found inside the shed on the pole as a means of having something aside from a pole to rest my explosives on. I spent a good hour hitting f7 after dynamite explodes and does nothing aside from occasionaly maming party members because I got bored and stashed live explosives on them and used Right-Click > Shove to keep them against the rocks... Obviously, it didn't really do much in terms of clearing a path, but it really got Vic to stop complaining...

I haven't seen anything in the rest of the Fallout 1 or 2 missions that have required me to do anything with the Backpack. All of my item-using has been done via Inventory > Equip / "Use".

I didn't mention my version number in hopes of being able to skip some sort of "hard part" in-game. (I won't bother going into details about why the concept of "patching is easier the playing" makes little to no sense) I simply wanted to help whoever could be helping me, by giving them as much information about my problem as I am able. Every guide I've read about it just simply says "Attach the pole to the cart, and then attach the dynamite to the pole." Sounds easy enough, right? Well, it wasn't for me.

Anyways, thanks to both Big_T_UK & Per. I'll go ahead and run back to the Military Base and see if I can't figure it out now. As for the saved-game converter, I'll probably pass. I'll more then likely install the patch after I finish the game this time around and see what's changed. Still haven't beat Fallout 2. Got it back when it came out...

I have to agree that figuring out exactly HOW to attach the dynamite and rod on the cart together caused a headache for me when I first stumbled upon it in Fallout. It was almost as hard as trying to find the bag in the shitpit.

Step 1: Pick up pole off of ground.
Step 2: Run to shack north of cart and grab dynamite from chest.
Step 3: Run back to cart.
Step 4: Hold Left Mouse Button and select backpack. Click on the metal pole.
Step 5: Hold Left Mouse Button on the POLE and select backpack. Click on dynamite (WITHOUT ARMING).
Step 6: Click on cart and push hand. If you pass a STR check, the screen should fade and the rocks should explode.
