Military flight simulators

A genre that seems to have been dead lately, if ever alive at all. I've really been looking for a good flight simulator these past few days, and my search resulted in;

Lock on: Modern air combat this is for Mac, but there's a gold version out for the PC, supposedly fixing all the horrible bugs plaguing the original. I'm not sure I trust that, though.

and

Falcon 4.0: Allied force, probably the best of the two, but a bit older. What I like less about this game is the apparent ability to only pilot the F-16 and its variants.

I'm looking for a flight simulator that's not set during WW2, I have enough of those and I'm getting sick of them, and that have nice graphics (at least acceptable).

Any thoughts?

Good luck. When you find a decent one, hook me up.

Why The Vault Dweller doesnt play flight sims any more:

Space is kinda boring too. I'd prefer a modern flight simulator. Also, isn't Tie Fighter kind of old, graphics-wise?

Fallout is kinda old, graphics-wise too. So?

Tie Fighter, along with X-Wing Alliance and even X-wing are some of favorite games for many reasons. First, lets face it, its fun to go on trench runs, RotJ death star reactor runs, blow up tie fighters and x wings and star destroyers etc for the sheer star wars-ish feel.

But more importantly the physics engine was impressive and life-like, given the constraints of the universe. Acceleration rates varied, along with turn rates, load out, range of attack, lock on time, and everything else that makes a simulator a simulator, not a cheesy Freelancer-ish graphics masturbationfest.

Graphics are nice, but secondary to a good physics engine, which in the end is what I use to define whether a simulator is designed to simulate something or as a vehicle for a storyline or graphics engine.

How can you talk about space sims and not mention Freespace 2?

Freespace 2...hmm, from what I recall I wasn't terribly impressed by that one. The whole booster use thing made the issue of maneuverability and speed irrelevent, especially since the AI never used the technique, iirc.

Could be wrong though, about even having played the game as much as anything.

Ever try the Operation Flashpoint series? Thats about as close to a sim as a game can be; without being a sim. Also, tons of custom addons (thousands of planes, tanks, jeeps, motercycles, weapons, helicopters, etc.) which most are EXTREMELY high quality. Huge (think 10+ square miles) maps. Great graphics, REALLY intense battles.

Here is an example of a battle I played with friends last night...

20 soldiers (snipers, riflemen, AA, AT, machine gun), 10 M1A1 tanks, 10 MG jeeps, 4 AH-64s, and 2 A10s for bombing.

The A10s fly over the town, dropping 6 GBUs (think micro nukes) each, trashing most of the buildings (which probably had snipers in them).

The other team's SHILKA (AA tank) tracers light up the sky, and cut the two A10s to pieces, the pilots bail and parachute into the trees.

The M1A1 have moved into position, and now start bombarding the town with HE (High Explosive) shells.

The soldiers start crawling towards the town, while the tanks shoot shells over their heads.

The jeeps start driving around the outside of the forest (way too dense to try and drive through with THAT many jeeps).

Now the AH-64s (my squad) fly in low, and start spraying FFARs (un-guided rockets) at the T-72s (heavy tanks), and shooting Hellfire missiles (guided) at the shilkas.

Sounds good right? Well, heres where things went wrong.

The M1A1s stop shooting, the soldiers rush, and the tanks follow.

I hear Kash (friend who was commanding the jeep squad) say "Oh come the fuck on..." into his mic, then "Kash has been killed" (or something like that ) appears on the screen. He then says "Wow, we drove over a hill and there was like 5 BMPs (Tank/APCs) camped out there."

Out of the trees next to town erupts a ton of green (russian) tracers, and most of our infantry are killed (the rest are run over by our own tanks, as they try to crawl towards the town for cover from the snipers).

Keep in mind that this is all happening VERY quickly.

My AH-64 squad starts spraying the shit out of the trees with 30mm machine guns.

Now we are getting shot at with AK-74s (or 47s, or RPKs, or all of the above).

"HAH!" I think, MGs vs helis? We win.

I get cocky and start flying really low (almost touching the tops of the trees).

An RPG whizzes right by me, so I pull up (wouldent want to take a hit from one of those, now would I?).

KAACK! the chopper glass is broken, and the bullet hits my head..

My chopper starts falling, crashes, and destroys, two others on the way down.

The last chopper just skims the top of a tree, and is destroyed.

I dont recall seeing 3 M1A1s get destroyed, but 3 are now missing.

The 7 remaining M1A1s finally reach the town, and are destroyed by numerous satchel charges placed on the side of the road.

So...who is left on our team? The two AI pilots from the A10s!

When you die you turn into a seagull, so I fly over where the AI pilots landed. They were both stuck running into a tree, over and over.

Kicked them from console, and we lost by default.

Good Game :D

This is all very nice, but it's the same as Battlefield 2. Sure, you've got tons of cool vehicles, but I want a more complex one. You know, like a simulator.

And I don't have nearly enough friends to make Op Flash fun fun fun.

Meh. I'll take the actual Blackhawk helicopter Flight Simulator that's about 3 blocks from where i live and work.. way better to be sitting in an actual cockpit than looking at a moniter, holding a cheap, crude joystick..
