Monkey Island Returns

Maybe it is old, doesn't mean it's untrue.

Try repeating "sun comes up in the east and goes down in the west" to everyone around you multiple times, see how that goes. ;)

Because the market hasn't been good for old franchises lately. And it's not just Fallout.
Mega Man 9, Punch Out, Bionic Command: Rearmed.
Deus Ex 3, Fallout 3, Kotor.

So.. some people fuck up and some don't.. it's not this mysterious "market" that is making games, it's various people.

Thanks for you precious advice.

...Yeah, the market is made of tiny dwarves. Never people.

Yes. And don't get your hopes up and you won't be disappointed.

Which is universally true and not especially true in this case.

You are extrapolating from a completely unrelated dataset, ie recent big budget installments of very big franchises by companies that have no proven track record in the making of those games.

This is completely unrelated to what is happening with Monkey Island right now.

Déjà frickin' vu.
A friend of mine just said exactly the same thing to me. :|

From the press release:

The Monkey Island celebration continues later in the summer when LucasArts publishes The Secret of Monkey Island™: Special Edition, a completely re-imagined version of the first game in the series that adds updated high definition graphics, a re-mastered musical score, and full voiceover to the classic adventure game originally launched in 1990.
The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition will be made available on Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and PC.
Pay attention to the very last word. :P

Don't get your hopes up, guys.

Why not? Nothing wrong with a remaster and Telltale are certainly proven Adventure fiddlers.

I think the reason he is saying not to get your hopes up is what happened to Fallout.

Many people here got their hopes up when FO3 was coming and then they got their hopes crushed. I actually liked FO3 but you get the picture of why you might wanna be cautious...

Please look at the developer credits for this game, not only is a large part of the team people who originally worked on the original MI series, but Telltale also isn't entirely incompetent, their games have all been decent and entertaining adventure games, and Sam & Max was a great follow up to not only the original game but the comics that came before it as well.

Awesome. I'd like to say it can only get better after MI4, but I'd rather not jinx it.

Yeah, MI4 was the weakest one. I'm not sure I like the graphics in the updated version of the first one, though, although it's a bit hard to make out. If it turns out to be good, I hope they'll give MI2 the same treatment, since that one's my favourite in the series.

In any case, I'll be picking up both the enhanced version and Tales of Monkey Island.

The enhanced version seems to be retaining the oldschool animation at the least, it looks like they just applied a new coat of paint without really changing much else, beyond adding voice acting.

I really hope they add in something like Curse of Monkey Island's extra difficult mode (Mega-Monkey I think it was called) because I memorized all the puzzles in the original SoMI a long time ago.

Probably going to keep with the oldskool graphics but the voice acting as I love Dom's Guybrush. :D
Even though I got a 360 I am so getting this on the PC, it jusn't isn't the same playing a point 'n click on a console.

I appreciate the popularity of the genre on the consoles personally, you might not have noticed, because it happened very quietly, but in the past few years the genre has resurrected itself. There are absolute tons of adventure titles on the Nintendo DS and Wii, there's even a port of the Sam & Max Season 1 to the Nintendo Wii that plays pretty well.

Well, first of all Wii and DS are not as high profile among the old school as their sales numbers could indicate.
Second of all, what titles are you talking about again?
I've got a Wii, but the only adventure games I can remember coming out were the TellTale games (that I bought for PC already) and Zack & Wiki. Please Please Please enlighten me about the rest.

Also, here's some fun for you all: Ron Gilbert plays MI1

You're really going to use KOTOR as an example? It was only the second game n the series...

IRT Adventure game resurrection:

DS does have some great ones... Hotel Dusk and the Phoenix Wright Series immediately come to mind

on the Wii... TellTale has the Strongbad games, and Sam & Max. There's also Zak & Wiki, and Broken Sword. I think there was some Nancy Drew game that was supposed to be alright, but those were the big ones.

Since when are either KotOR or Deus Ex old franchises - or even good ones? KotOR is yet another BioWare RPG with recycled characters and storyline, so making it into an MMO is less of an insult to a good game series and more of an ironic punishment to developers who do more harm than good to the RPG genre with their lazy design and uncreative writing. Deus Ex series has only one great game, so it can hardly be qualified as a good franchise that's getting ruined by incompetent developers; it is rather more like a shitty franchise that had one improbable brush with greatness.

The remake looks good. As I understand, it's the exactly the orignal with the new graphics being on top of it (wich can be disabled, so you'll really just play the original). I'll probably buy it, if the price is reasonable.

Not so sure about the new game tho. Haven't really made my mind up yet if i like the new art-design. Didn't really like the way Guybrush looked in those screenshotss.
But then again, that's exactly what I though when I saw MI2 back then. And of course it turned out to be a good, fun game. So I guess I'll have to wait and see more of it.

All this talk about adventures and remakes made me think of another gem I'd like to see revived properly: The Dig.
Damn, I had a blast playing it back when I was younger. Too bad my game disk seems to be broken / unreadable.

You've been missing a lot, the original Broken Sword has been ported to the Wii and DS, there are games such as Trace Memory, Hotel Dusk and even the Phoenix Wright games have heavy adventure gaming influence. There's an absolutely gigantic load of Agatha Christie adventure games that have been ported to the Wii. Heck, there's even Freddie Fish and Pajama Sam among one or two Carmen Sandiego games. Sherlock Holmes for the DS, etc.

Not to forget that Flower, Sun and Rain was recently ported to the DS, Myst and Syberia as well, but they didn't really fit the touch screen all that well.

So, the first episode of TellTale's MI came out today (or yesterday? Stupid timezones). Anyone tried it yet?

I thought it was pretty good, though I have no idea why they made that new movement thingamajig. Probably consoles' fault.
Puzzles were mostly fun and hint system was helpful.
Dominic Armato still sounds like the same Guybrush from Curse, and is generally awesome, but the other voices were a bit inconsistent in quality.
Mostly good dialogue and one-liners.
And I didn't mind the art style and 3D as much as I thought I would. Kinda grew on me.
But hell, it's just great to have more TellTale adventure gaming. Haven't played any of their games since the Sam & Max episodes.

edit: Oh yeah, and I have no idea why they've shown the beginning off in trailers as such, because it was the weakest part of the game.
The cliffhanger ending was cool tho
