I think the entire "swearing in" is purely symbolic. What you are promising to do is just to be honest, and while you may go to Hell if you lie, if you are caught by the court, you suffer from the sin of perjury.

Showing the ten commandments in court- My old law school was a catholic school- so they had the ten commandments, Hammurabi's Code and the Magna Carta as displays in the lobby. But was the intention just religious.

One can think of the ten commandments as an advocation of judeo-christian beliefs, but it could also suggest historical evolution- the origins and evolution of legal texts. Then again, it could do both.
