Movie: Synecdoche New York

Gintoh

First time out of the vault
Has anyone seen this overlooked masterpiece? It came out last year and is by Charlie Kauffman.

If anyone hasn't seen it (most people) they should.

It doesn't really have mass market appeal. It's extremely convoluted and self-absorbed. But all right.

Adaptation, now that's a masterpiece.

Well it's a movie that is not for everyone. Adaptation was Kauffman's second best, I loved it, but Synecdoche is better IMO. It's deeper than Adaptation I think. It's a love it or hate it movie, I loved it. In fact after seeing it a 2nd time I would consider it my favorite movie...

Ah man I loved Adaptation. Definitely had me thinking at the end trying to piece everything together.

Still, you'd really put Adaptation above Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? I don't know, I thought that one was a classic.

I saw it recently and loved it. I still think "Adaptation" was a better movie though. However, it's Kauffman's first time as a director, not just writer, so that might've holded him back a bit. I noticed that his collaborations with Spike Jonze were better edited, which again may speak to Kauffman's lack of experience as a director. Still, "Synecdoche" is one of those movies I know I'll be watching again, and I don't do that unless movie deserves it. Anyone thought ending was beautiful? I almost cried..

Confused. It smells of its Auteur. The Directorial Debut shows, at times. It's almost a shame that a film packing so much emotion must also bear this baggage.

Yeah, Eternal Sunshine is definitely a masterpiece.
