MSG Review (text corrections / changes for Fallout 1)

Isn't it easier to just upload the text files just like Sduibek suggested to mediafire.com. I mean its a lot of waiting and links die probably.
Mediafire is fing awesome, no account needed to upload. Links stay online forever. At least my releases never died.

Good job though :clap:
 
I'm excited to go through these once I can work on FIXT some more, it'll be great to have a bunch more text fixes :)
 
Excellent, I'll check these out "soon". (Busy with school lately). So I should be able to get back to you by the end of the weekend for sure.

And putting up game files is totally fine. I think the only exception would be actually posting master.dat or critter.dat, that would be a no-no ;)
 
These will be included in alpha 6.2 release. I'm not keeping 100% of your changes (because some I disagree with) but I would say at least 90% of them.

I can't seem to find a working link to MSG_review_08.7z , does anyone have a copy of that? The only one I have, I'm pretty sure it's version 07 not 08.

I hope robbforce hasn't dissapeared on us. I don't think so though, it's only been abuot 3 months. Probably just taking care of real life instead of working on Fallout, whereas I'm the other way around lol.

I'm still around-ish. ;) I was getting burnt out working a bunch of hours at work (programmer) then trying to sit and edit text when I got home. Then with your current releases I thought I'd wait until you stabilized and create a new patch based on 6.x instead of 5.3.

I'll check back in occasionally to see if you get FIXT in a place where you can let it rest for a while, then I'll pick back up where I left off.
 
@robbforce Okay, I've done a second pass of making sure all my files have converted quotation marks and double quotation marks to their "dumb" versions, and converting elipsis and ". . ." to "..."

I am wondering, what do you think about slashes and dashes? A proper "en" or "em" dash in typography should be used when you are doing - like this one right now - the sidetracks or extra info inserts. The proper long dashes definitely look better. The short ones aren't even a dash at all, they're hyphens, which is why it looks crappy when used as a dash :lol:

EDIT: Okay, I checked and Fallout is able to display the longer dash. — is the symbol. I think at some point I'd like to make all the dashes use the — symbol when appropriate.

Started out as a small project and turned huge.  I proofread and used a spell
checker; mostly spelling, punctuation, and capitalization fixes - no lines were
added or seriously rewritten.  I only made grammar changes if it was 100%
obvious it was a mistake and not someone from the wasteland just using bad
English ("There", "They're", and "Their" probably accounted for a good two dozen
fixes).  I suspect at least some aren't used in the game at all, but if I wasn't
sure, I included it.

Regarding the VERY prolific spelling/grammar/capitalization inconsistencies,
here's what I went with.

"brahmin" and "brahma"
"Deathclaw" (capitalized since in F1 it's a legendary monster) 
"holodisk" (spelled about five different ways) 
"Hub bucks" (no changes to "caps" or "scripts", just "Hub Bucks", or "hubbucks")
"Hubber" (a couple of files used "Hubbian", which to me sounds like an alien
          race)
"mutant" 
"mole rat"
"Nuka-Cola" (rather than Nuka Cola, Nuka cola, etc.) 
"Rads" (as in radiation - I don't care for the capitalization, but it seems to
        be the most common usage, only ran into one or two files that used
        "rads")
"radscorpion" (the single word is the most common usage) 
"skag" 
"skav" (an occupation rather than a title in my opinion - just a short version
        of scavenger) 
"super mutant" (two exceptions; The Lieutenant and the Master both still use
                "Super Mutant" due to inflection in their speech) 
"Thieves' Circle" (there are two or three variations of this, but that's what
                   Loxley calls it, and he's the boss)
"Vault", "Vault 13", and "Vault 15"

Initiate, Scribe, Sergeant, and other words used as titles should now be
capitalized where appropriate (i.e. "Greene's the sheriff" vs. "Sheriff Greene")

Another thing I don't care for much is the capitalization of inventory items, as
in "Garret gives you some Flares".  But it was practically universal, so I left
that alone.

Also tried to make square brackets the universal action notifiers in dialogs.
Several used "()" or "<>".

I agree that the long (em) dash should be used for pauses in sentences, instead of hyphens. No opinion on slashes. I don't see much difference there, honestly, other than the small difference in angle.

I did review nimrod's readme when I was just starting and used his guidelines as a base. I missed that he left Super Mutant as-is in the Lieutenant and Master dialogues, because of inflection. In most cases, I left the sentence structure alone with voiced dialogue because obviously it wouldn't match. With those files, I would only fix spelling errors or punctuation. However, in the case with Cabbot, he had some clear errors that I fixed (I hope they weren't intentional errors!) and disconnected the voice file as a result. No way around that unless a new voice file is created. Fortunately, I believe the dialogue was triggered from tell-me-about so those lines won't come up very often.

Hmmm, I'm not sure about those disconnects, I hadn't noticed that. If it's in normal dialog we definitely want the voice still. I'll find the entries you're talking about and see what I think.

The merging is more time-consuming than you might think, so at the moment I still have 225 of your files to merge with mine.

If you have the time, it would be great to get you to review everything again, but wait until I give the go-ahead... once I've finished merging those 225 files you can continue. I think these will be much less work for you this time around :nod: I will keep you updated when things change.

I looked at the readme to recall why I did it. It was a tricky problem. If you ask Cabbot about "Ancient Order" then he goes on to explain a group split from the Brotherhood during their Exodus from the Military base, after stealing a bunch of equipment, then headed southwest to another facility, which should be the Glow. Based on the simple fact that the Glow is located in the southeast from either the Military base or the Lost Hill bunker, what he says isn't accurate. Then, looking even further, the timing was off too because D. Allen and his group didn't leave until some time after they settled in the bunker, some 50 years after the Exodus I think.

The merging is more time-consuming than you might think, so at the moment I still have 225 of your files to merge with mine.

If you have the time, it would be great to get you to review everything again, but wait until I give the go-ahead... once I've finished merging those 225 files you can continue. I think these will be much less work for you this time around :nod: I will keep you updated when things change.

Certainly! I'd like to eventually finish the review. Even with the 1000+ changes I made, I only got as far as the J's, haha. The most difficult part I found with seeing the changes in a merge was making sure the line breaks, between the old file and new, were the same first. Most merge tools will see the start of a line ok, then hit a line break and highlight the entire block of following lines as a change, hiding details like punctuation or spelling fixes. That's why I had built two patches, one to take out line breaks and the other to make all other changes, just because it allowed the merge tool to highlight the detailed changes within the text.

I realize this is necroposting, but it's worth noting that robbforce's old work is now being archived as part of fixtlang at GitHub,
and he is currently adding more changes/fixes as well. :D :D :D

Also @Drobovik I have no idea if this has any significance for your Fallout Database but now you know as well ;)

I really need to know this--- Brahmin and Brahma. What's the difference? I remember a discussion about it a few years back, but I forgot the outcome. If I remember correct, Brahma is *not* the female variant, it can still be male OR female. It's also not plural, no?

"Here you can see all my Brahmin!"
"Here you can see all my Brahma!"

"You see a Brahmin."
"You see a Brahma."

Tandi in Fo1 tells the player to look for a Brahma, while (at least with Fixt?) ever single Brahmin in the Hub is called Brahma as well.
 
My understanding was (and I believe Nimrod did the same) that brahma is singular, brahmin is plural. So, anyway that's how I'm using them. cow=brahma cows=brahmin.

I never actually considered gender into it. :confused:

EDIT: Nope, Nimrod's readme doesn't go into detail on it. Hm.
