First time out of the vault
It was confusing where to post this in the forum so I posted it here.
Many people are unhappy about what happened to Black Isle, and that Fallout 3 has been shelved. I am one of them. It sickens me that the company has chosen to do this, as I have been a loyal consumer for many years. I happen to own Baldur’s Gate, Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn Collectors Edition (even though they messed up my order), Baldur’s Gate: Tales Of The Sword Coast, Baldur’s Gate II: Throne of Bhaal, Battle Chess, Blood & Magic, Carmageddon, Carmageddon 2: Carpocalypse Now, Fallout, Fallout 2, Planescape: Torment, and Stonekeep.
Obviously I don’t own every copy of a game Interplay has created, but I have a list about 6 games I am planning to get (Some of which are older). I went into Circuit City yesterday and I picked up a copy of Icewind Dale: Collection and held it in my hand for a near second before I placed it down.
I thought after I waited for so long for sequels to Baldur’s Gate II, Stonekeep, and Fallout 2, how could I support a company that has turned its back on me? I, a consumer for several years, feel betrayed. I always believed in Interplay and I would smirk when I loaded a game and saw the Interplay seal and Black Isle as well.
I know times have been tough for Interplay and that pirating running rampant sure doesn’t help. Many people are waiting to purchase games until later when they loose value, because there are so many games and who has money for 3 games at $49.99 a piece? I want to tell you every game on the list of games that I bought from Interplay, I have bought as soon as it hit stores, with the exception of Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn that I pre-ordered from the Interplay store. I am sure many others feel the same.
As I said, I feel like Interplay has turned its back on me. I feel I must do the same. I chose not to purchase Icewind Dale: Collection. I chose to not recommend any Interplay title PC and console and tell my friends that own consoles to not buy from Interplay.
I consider me and Interplay currently equal now. I am boycotting all Interplay games. Though I would assume that Interplay would sell the rights to Fallout 3, I suggest giving the buying company the current alpha status of the product. I really don’t know how selling another company the license works. I don’t know that the product would be handed to them anyway. I would doubt that it would. I suggest selling the license with the alpha version so that the company could make the best possible Fallout 3 game as they could. I consider developing the game at Interplay, would be making the game the best that it could be, but since that option is nil. I am sure many fans would no longer feel that Interplay has turned it’s back on them. This shows that Interplay, even though they can’t do it themselves will stand up to the “By Gamers. For Gamers.” slogan. Only then I would consider ending my ‘boycott’.
Though I may not make much of a difference, I feel that it is only right considering I have been a PC gamer for about 9-10 years and a console gamer for about 15 years. I am 21 now. Many people feel as I do and together we can make an impact. I am not trying to say or imply that I am trying to extort Interplay. I also know my gamers say they won’t buy a game if a company doesn’t put some feature into so and so of a game and then go buy the game the first day it hits stores, I am not one of them. I have a strong sense of morality and self-control and I am sure many more people than I would feel cheated if Interplay did not sell the license to PC Fallout 3. As I said I would assume you would do this, especially since I hear the company is in money troubles. Many fans are concerned about another company doing it because it looses the chance of being the best it could be. This is why I would say selling or handing the buyer the alpha version with the plans of what the team was planning on doing or implementing, is taking a step forward for Interplay to reach out to the gamer. It seems that Interplay is straying from the PC game world, why not get some more money for the tools and respect points from the gamers? Then if the buying company messed up Fallout 3, it shows the Fallout fans to never buy from them.
In closing I would like to say, Interplay the only one your hurting by not taking a step forward is yourself in lost revenue from license, alpha version/tools and from future buyers. I for one don’t want to see another game company go under and Interplay seems to be teetering on the edge.
