My humble suggestion thread

First time out of the vault
I've read a few threads here and some of them contain the things I'd like to see in Fallout 3 ... but then they have a lot of stuff that I don't like too so I decided to make my own. I don't want anything drastic, just a couple little suggestions that I think are relevant.

1) Turn-based combat system. Please don't turn it into a stupid hack and slash (thx interplay) ... Fallout's turn based system coupled with the hex grid movement system really made it unique. I wouldn't even mind a somewhat turn-based system like in Knights of the old Republic, but ideally please retain the original combat system.

2) Retain the optional party. I played through both Fallouts with and without a party and aside from a couple little storyline quirks I enjoyed solo'ing the game much more than going through with a party.

3) Keep it mature. I think I read that it was still going to be rated M so I'm not too worried about this one :)

4) Character Customization. Fallout 1 and 2 were amazing for their time, but now people expect more. I want to be able to make a character that is at least somewhat unique, both visually and combat wise. I liked the option of being able to spec into heavy weapons or more precise smaller guns of Fallout 1 and 2 ... please keep that and ideally expand on it.

5) Keep it free-roam. I loved the way in Fallout 1 and 2 you could really go wherever you wanted, but you were guided through the game by questlines etc. Please don't do a Fable thing or a Knights of the Old Republic thing.

6) Graphics. This seems to be a touchy issue ... I loved Fallout 1 and 2 for its depth and not graphics. There seems to be a split between the older people who appreciated that more and the younger guys who always seem to want bigger and better. I don't want a Morrowind v2.0 with Fallout characters. I want to retain the top-slant view please please please. You can make a truly amazing gaming graphic wise while still keeping the original feel of the game.

I guess overall I just want all the best elements that made Fallout 1 and 2 unique to be kept in the new sequal. I got sick when I saw the plans for Brotherhood of Steel. You can make an amazing game without overhauling everything that made Fallout 1 and 2 so great and different from everything else.

Please don't make this game a carbon copy of the latest "super cool" RPG's (SW, Fable, Morrowind etc etc) ... keep it Fallout.

You essentially summed up most of the concerns and desires of the community. I agree with pretty much everything you wrote and would also like to note it's refreshing to see someone post a sober wishlist for a change. Morons who want first-person Fallout with real-time combat have been rampant lately.

KotOR combat wasn't turn-based in any sense. It was real-time, but with a pause option and a system of arbitrary rounds with the purpose of giving it a bit slower, more controlled pace, but with poor results. An average KotOR battle almost always degrades into a chaotic skirmish with ranged fighters standing toe-to-toe and Jedi hacking away brutally at the nearest opponent. Frankly, I would be very disappointed if FO3 had such a combat system.

Eh, I dunno. I agree that in kotor it did seem to get rather chaotic sometimes ... and like I mentioned of anything I'd really really prefer the original system. And yea I didn't mean to imply that kotor was turn based, but it wasn't entirely real time either. Basically my main point there was that a real time Fallout rpg would be very dissappointing.

Yeah, pretty much sumed everyone's thoughts up here, one niggling thing though:

Hey! Agree completely, but I'm a younger guy, and pray for the old graphics. (Moans for a while)

I'm sure that you will get 2) to 5). They are not that hard to make, it would require a strong desire to fuck with the series to remove them, and Bethesda doesn't have such a desire. About 1) or 5), though, I don't know. Many people won't buy a game just because it is isometric, so that would be a bad move for Bethesda. I don't know if there are any who won't buy a turn based game, and if they are, they are probably less than the fallout fans who won't buy a real time game.

Fallout 3?
Three words...Van Buren

Hm. I wonder...would you preffer the Fallout way to go wherever you want, or the Morrowind way to go wherever you want?

Nay, Interplay went kablooie after cancelling VB in order to focus on F:POS. VB could have pulled it out of the shitter.

I would like to see the Arcanum way of roaming around.

Ideal Fallout 3? With trains? With space stations? Operational Jupiter-style rockets? With... dun dun ROBOT ARMIES!1

I think not.

Look on the bright side - trains are better than Hummers, space stations are better than mafia towns, operational rockets are better than operational space shuttles and robot armies are better than half-naked chick armies.

Lies. He's just going with the current trend amongst vault rodents to become hippies and look on bright sides and such.

Bitterness! Despair! Deception! Forsakeennnnnnn.

Alright people, stop spamming. Especially swampcat, give content to your posts and don't just post 'I agree'.
