My sketches

BReal

First time out of the vault
INFO:

I have some times tried to design a Falloutish game ( not that I'm capable of creating anything like it ) as I have somekind of dream that one day I would work as a game designer in a game company ( well, one of my many dreams  )

Anyway, enough of that. Last night before I went to sleep I got an inspiration for two towns; Townish and Plaza. I wrote some info on both and drew little sketches of them so I could make them better when I get home ( I tend to forget VERY easily what I think, that's why I like to keep my notebook next to me when I'm somewhere else than home ^^ ).
But, I couldn't really finish Plaza as I was working too much on the logo of it, so I'll be just showing you Townish for now.

Townish

Type
A deserted outpost which is used by wastelanders as a quick rest spot, not a vital area but is linked to few people in the wasteland, mainly in Plaza.

Description
Now deserted Townish once served as a place worth to stop by when moving towards north. It was settled by the survivors of the war who mainly came from nearby towns when looking for better shelter, food and water.
These survivors established a community which was invite only, but the community provided the wastelanders a small garage like building which they could call "home". Here they could live while roaming the nearby areas, but the still weren't members of Townish.

2 years after the war the town slowly died when 10 kilometers in north a new and larger settlement was found; The Plaza. People migrated there and slowly the built houses and fences fell, the components and the town in general was looted by wastelanders and small gangs/tribes.

Now the outpost is the same what it looked when the original settlers found it; only some walls stand and the area is totally destroyed. The town is still used as a place where to rest, but only by those who are tough and brave enough to travel to south...

Landscape
The area around Townish is mostly flat. It is semi-dry area, but there is a small water source 1 kilometer east of the town. It is located on the "line" which separates South and North, the dangerous and the safe, the highly radiated and the not so highly radiated.

( These are once again just sketches, the final image will have maybe more houses, I don't really know. I think it's cool with few houses and some clutter here and there )

More to come in teh future! :)

Looks good. Hope to see more sketches of Townish and Plaza. Seems kinda weird though that they packed up and left a perfectly good town so they can go somewhere else.

Good luck with the game.

Most game designers I know use Google SketchUp - a simple 3D tool to create maps for dungeons etc. Try it one more time, using it, because now it's pretty rough, the perspective's way off amd other stuff, which could be avoided.

That's a good tip (I might look into that myself), but there's also this thing that... some people just love to actually use their hands and crayons whilst drawing, you know?

I think it's a charming sketch and when done properly it could look really sweet. Maybe check out my isometric landscapes for some inspiration (here).

Instead of using software, you could also just use a grid that you put under your drawing paper. You could use thin paper so you can see the grid right through the paper or you could use a lightbox. It'll simplify things a whole lot and not take away the fun of drawing at all.

Here is such an isometric grid. Just print it out and put it under your drawing paper (+ lightbox or just really thin paper, like marker paper, 60 or 70 grams max). It should help you keep things tight and organized.

Kudos!

Thanks for the comments guys (:

@Brendo: Well, the main idea in Plaza is that it's located in this mostly ruined city. It's got better defences than the small town and it has got more components to build the settlement. Also, the Plaza is located in a open space which was once a park near a shopping mall ( = the reason it was built there, as there was supplies and other scrap. More about it when I've written the background story ). Basically, it's just that a better place was found and slowly the place was deserted.
And I'm not creating a game, I'm just doing some designing if I some day manage to actually get in some sort of project :D

@Patriot_41: It's just a sketch for myself as I wouldn't remember these things anyway if I didn't put them up somewhere
I've actually tried sketchup before, it's pretty easy to use, that I admit :D Would be cool to make 3D models of them. I'll think about it.

@Alec: I've watched your drawings, I really like the style you're using.
Oh, and thanks for that grid, will be sure to use it when drawing the final version ;)

Ugh, man, can't they afford a proper 3D editing program? :S

The Sketchup thing is easy to use, fast and freeware. You don't need 3D studio for someone, who only does mockup for the area anyway. They don't animate, they don't paint textures, they need no lighting, rigging etc. Just a better way of explaining to the artists what they mean and the scale of things.

Nice sketch, BReal, despite some little, already pointed-out flaws.
This reminds me to draw some new Fallout-esque towns, which I always drew in high school during classes. :)
